Maxtoch XSWORD L2K // 2000 Meter Laser Tech Thrower // Full Review

Robert, there is no emitter.

I think the laser is supposed to be good for 10,000 hours, not 100% sure on that.

Very cool. Nice job. I don’t really have a need for a thrower larger than a C8 really but, this light makes me want to get one. I wish it was a little more affordable although I do understand this kind of performance comes at a price. Maybe I can save my pennies up for one. Thanks again.

I have not heard or seen anything on the life span of the laser source, I will see if Maxtoch can give me a number on that.

Also thanks toddcshoe

I own a Maxtoch light and its build quality is top-notch, even better that some of the major players currently in the market:

Oh you just had to show that one didn’t you tatasal? I’ve been trying to find one for a while now, made the mistake of letting mine go to the neighbors son and really wish I still had it.

Nice looking light, for sure.

Yeah, very nice looking light. I actually posted those photos before, but just for posterity (and kudos to Maxtoch ), here’s another one:

It will be interesting to see if the LEP technology gets enough support to develop, and eventually trickle down to a more affordable price point.

I wonder how small these can be made?

As small as a regular LED flashlight.

The Xsword is now available on the Aliexpress site………….

Wonder how long before Dale does a driver “up-grade”…

No telling what he may try before it is all said and done , but I have a feeling he may let this one stay as is for now.

I have a Shooter 2X and it is very good, though I sent it to giorgoskok here in Greece and he changed the led for a cooler one because I didn’t like the tint.
If they can ship the XSWORD L2K via “priority direct mail”,I could buy one.

Robo, did you measure the candela/throw? That’s like the biggest thing to measure.

Did I miss it in post #1?

Yes I helped in the design of the 2X actually. The light itself and the tint was specifically designed for hunting purposes on the 2X and it is a more lemon or yellowish tint. It does work well for hunting , while it may not be suited for a “general purpose” tint for some.
I love ALL my Maxtoch lights , as I have couple of their small 16340 lights ( long discontinued now) and I have 2 of the factory dedomed 2X , a 2X that I modded with a sliced SST40 and FET , the XHP70.2 model that I swapped to an XHP50.2 for better throw and now the Xsword.
I also HAD the Red and the Green 2X lights one of those was changed out to the regular 2X driver and XP-L HI emitter and the other sent to Richard (Mountain Electronics) as he was needing a 2X for a special project he was working on. I have 2 of the M24’s and I also did a give away and the 3rd M24 I had was given away here in the forum at that time.

I have always said that I would put the build quality of the Maxtoch lights right up there with any of the Big name lights though and still feel that way with the Maxtoch products.

I am also sending you a PM.

I don’t think I actually put it in the main review but ,

In high mode it was 1.8 million for around 1.8 or 1.9 miles of throw and in medium 943K for about 1.1 or 1.2 miles as far as the ANSI meter goes.

EDIT: Maybe I can talk Dale into getting another shot that is more clear at the water tower by his house at 1.9 miles away as he did in post #13. The bugs were really bad that night , but with some cooler weather moving in now, maybe they will not be so bad.
Of course he will have to wait on the rain to stops if it is as bad as it has been here. We had 10 5/8 inches in 14 hours the night before last and we are at 5 1/2 inches now since last night and still raining here.

This is new technology but if we’ll compare laser to classic led emitter than there is no doubt that led is more robust, with more life span and very easy to fix/swap when something dies.

I really like it but one thing is to play with that in our hands and other thing is to put it on magnum centerfire rifle… Just saying that I would only dare to put it on magnum centerfire if I would really know that they used electronics potting methods to make it more durable and plus it would be nice if they would offer spare parts support. I had laser flashlights failure before(ND3 lasergenetics, plus some older IR laser lights-illuminators) and I really could not do anything to fix them up.

Warranty? Yes but I certainly don’t want to send flashlight across whole world, wait several months for fixing it, pay for shipping and back shipping. That would cost more than whole laser module I assume.

But sure… I also have in plan to buy something like this :+1: and very good review.

Okay, so about 2680 meters. Even at less lumens than rated, it’s exceeding the factory throw numbers.

Yes , the beam is just super intense and it is amazing to me just how intense it is in person for such a low amount of lumens. I tried walking down to take some beamshots with just the Xsword to light my way and the hotspot is so small and so bright even at 30 to 40 feet in front of you , with zero spill ,that is disorienting and really hard to use the light for walking at night.

Indeed, rainy and cold so any further (better) beamshots will have to wait. We went from 90º for a high on Sunday to 44º for a high yesterday. Windy and rainy and just downright miserable for grumpy old men… I haven’t seen our rain gauge but pretty sure we haven’t had the 15” robo has had, I’m roughly 120 miles West of him. Been a turdfloater for a large part of the State, no doubt about it…

Glad to do the reviews and thanks.

As with many “new” items and with the new technology , I am sure any replacement parts or after market parts will still be awhile being available. I can say this light was designed for long distance searching for military , fire and rescue , police searches and such and not designed specifically for a hunting light or weapon mountable light as was the Shooter 2X and the M24 lights were , at least not to my knowledge.

With that being said and with me not wanting to try and tear into this new Xsword head due to it being glued well and also me not knowing how it goes together and fear of breaking the light before I can find any parts to fix it……………

I can say that with the Buck drivers Maxtoch uses in the previous lights they have designed , the drivers are either potted or at least semi potted on the weapon mountable lights.

Would I try to put this one on a high powered rifle at this time? Probably not because I just don’t know if the laser itself would handle the shock or not along with the other factors. I am pretty sure the laser is much more sensitive to the heavy recoil than a regular emitter is though and also pretty sure if that laser were to move even a miniscule amount inside the head , then the focus would probably be screwed up and the light not work right.

Now again with that all being said I CAN tell you that the Xsword will handle a pretty good jolt from experience already. I had the light set up on a tripod and I was in the back of my pickup with the tripod sitting on top of the tool box that is another 2 foot or so higher than the floor in the bed of the pickup. This put the light about 8 feet off the ground and I also had the legs pretty close together on the tripod so it tipped easy. I went to change modes with it sitting up there and hit the light knocking it off the tool box and it went straight to the ground , which was a hard limestone driveway. The light hit on the side of the head with the added weight of the tripod and never blinked or went off and is still working fine now.

That does not mean after a few times of something like this happening it wouldn’t either be messed up or quit working , or that repeated recoil from a high powered rifle wouldn’t kill the light eventually , but I do know it will handle a pretty good hit.
