Btw, Sofirn is going to make the trit hole a bit smaller and the magnet hole a fraction larger, so that both have a better fit.
They are still sorting out the potting and I got no clear answer yet if they are going to succeed in getting it right. I now suggested to Barry that I’d rather see no potting at all than the mushy pea stuff that is in my samples. I gave this option for Sofirn because I have little faith in it atm, and because my (my son’s) and Sofirn’s brutal testing showed that the light is pretty robust already without a functional potting.
There is indeed going to be a group buy, for the people on the interest list, to get the light a bit cheaper than retail, no details yet how it will be arranged. Barry did sort of warn that the lights for the group buy will probably be only in black (I did respond that some people would be disppointed by that). I asked for the prices, for the gb and retail, but I did not get them yet.
I have EDC-ed the 3200K C01 for a week now, as a second light next to my SST-20 high CRI triple and it is growing on me. Before I got these samples I was concerned by the wide 60 degrees leds but now I like that nice even floody beam, it is really pleasant and nothing like the ugly Fenix E01 beam. When playing with it when there’s ambient light around it does not impress, but in total darkness it does its job very well: close-up at 10 cm it gives enough light for proper illumination, for reading a book the amount and the spreading of light is very good, and when your eyes are dark-adapted it lights quite an area in front of you: if every other light fails when you are lost in the woods at night, this light will get you home. (you have over 40 hours of light on a AAA alkaline).
Thanks for the reply djozz it would be nice to have the brass plate contacts but at this sub $10 price point I'm more than happy to tin the contact pads myself. Thanks for making this project happen!

I won’t say a word about potting because I know nothing about it! If Sofirn sorts it out, I guess it would be a good “extra” to keep things in place! But seeing your son’s test…I believe it will be a strong light after all :smiling_imp:
The only thing I would be a little more “bored” (not upset), is about the “black lights for all” on the group buy :zipper_mouth_face: Most of my collection is black, but I was really expecting this to come in different “flavours”.
In this way, I guess that for me and for many other people it would be pertinent to know:
a) the GB price and the “normal” prices (I know you’re on it)
b) if Sofirn will still do “coloured” versions independently of the GB (I say this because I may change my choice and get 1 black light of each tint on the GroupBuy, and then 1 or 2 coloured lights of each body colour, of each tint)
c) any clue if a diffuser will be an option as extra? (or even better, can you point the bezel’s edge diameter?)
I have only asked once for a diffuser, and forgot about asking for it more often. I ask many questions, some are answered, others ignored, it is easy to overlook the questions that get ignored unfortunately.
Thanks for the measures I was trying to see if the diffuser of the Nitefox K3 would fit, but it’s a no-go, the head is larger!
Well, no issue about that ! I guess communication must be difficult sometimes and it is better to focus on the main aspects, in this case, the flashlight itself! That’s what we need to get the hands on
The head diameter is pretty close to the E01, and reportedly you can use a chapstick cap as a diffuser on that light. That will probably reduce the lumens more than a dedicated diffuser, but in a pinch, it should be an option.
I think that given the price point of about 6 bucks. I would easily take 2 or 3 of these. I’m not the biggest fan of twistys now that there are so many side switch lights. But I think that for the few dollars they cost, they wild make back up, back up lights, glove box lights, tool box lights and gifts.
As said above, there’s holes in the tail of the light to put put a magnet and/or a titium vial in yourself, but neither is provided. The reflector will not be further polished. The polishing idea was way more relevant for the design idea to make the reflector parabolic than it is for the simple cone that is the final shape, you will probably see no positive effect of polishing in the current design, or even worse, it may introduce beam artefacts.
But you make me wonder what stops you going to work with a AAA-twisty with trit installed?
Could be something more reasonable like he’s working around sensitive measuring equipment. There has to be some medical scanners you should not have that stuff around.
Nuclear power plant. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of Hydrogen, and could set off sensitive monitors in certain locations. And since literally everything is taken very seriously, in the name of nuclear safety, then setting off or causing a monitor to alarm could be a big deal.
Thanks for the info guys. The question on reflector polishing was just a curiosity, I see that it may not help, but rather potentially cause some adverse effects.
