(BLF) Sofirn Q8 V1.5: The XPL HI monster, DIY parts + Extended 8x18650 tubes GB Interest List

interested in BLF Q8 tube. One set.
Thanks

So… 4S conversion, using (at least) two tubes for more power, XHP50.2 emitters, in a Sofirn Q8? Are you going to use a Lexel driver? Or a L4P driver? Other?

@Kasperr, do you mean 1x extension sets(2 tubes+2 carriers) or 2x extension sets(4 tubes+4 carriers)?

@Dale, what kind of danger of society are you thinking to build with an 16 cell Q8?

It’s obviously not a 3V setup. You’d blow the LEDs and traces everywhere if you tried something that way, even with Luxeon MZs.

A 6V setup would be good, but still way too much current for the XHP50.2s, since XHP50.2s are more fiddly than the XHP70.2

A 12V setup with 4xXHP 70.2s would work well, although you’d be at the limit for the LEDs if each is paired with 4x18650s BeCu spring bypassed carriers. And at the limit to create a fission reactor lol.

However, the Q8s design is extremely good compared to something like a Haikelite MT09R.

It has much better finning, meaning active cooling works quite well actually, and can be easily modded for more heat sinking potential.

I could see a 12v buck driver working well with 4 x xhp50.2.

Now a xhp70.2 mcpcb would be sweet as you could use a FET driver, but I don’t think anyone makes one. You might have to use 4 seperate mcpcb.

Xhp35 would drop right in. Would be like the Sofirn one on steroids

There are inherent problems to many of the scenario’s, I bought a 21” bar of 3” dia 6061 to be able to re-create the head so more mass and multiple emitters, maybe wired up to facilitate the use of the carriers… I need to get a bunch of parts in hand and go down to the lab and see what Igor can help me create.

What would the 50.2’s do as a quad in 2S2P configuration with a 12V FET Zener modified driver? 70.2’s might fare better, but then, 4P 35’s would also do well but the current would need to be limited, maybe not so much on a single driver but… I may be getting to far gone to do these things, hard to think anymore.

Quad 35’s would only be likely to make 8,000 lumens or so, not even worth the effort if I can’t see 12-15,000. Just sayin…

For the XHP50.2s, Lexel’s buck driver at 8A would do well for you, and at 4A/LED, with a nice AR lens, you’d probably be getting about 2800 lumens/LED, so an actual 11 000 lumens of regulated runtime would actually be possible with a 4S setup.

You’d actually be the 1st guy to create a stable 11 000 OTF lumens as long as the light is sufficiently cool, which is the problem here of course. Mind you, this would be amazing still.

Wonder why I hadn’t thought of doing that build… Oh yeah. Tint shift and low CRI :frowning:

Does any know a source for 4500k-5700k Luxeon MZs? I’d love to get some

Ok, I have a plan. Targeting 15,000+ lumens. We’ll see how it goes. And I’ve “drawn it up” so I don’t forget.

Wont the Luxeon MZ have a donut on the Q8 reflector?

Still have to do that mod, and I expect a serious donut hole. I’m planning to heavily frost the lens with sanding paper to get rid of that and create a massive flood beam.

Take the reflector out entirely and put 3x carclo triples for 9x MZ for an ultimate flooder

I've mentioned before in few Q8 threads that Q8 OP reflector made by Sofirn would be nice addition to Q8 modding parts.

In for 2 sets for BLF Q8 (4 tubes+4 carriers)

Well, there is DC-fix that you could use, which will let more of the light through the lens! And if you want to reduce the amount of light that gets focused into a beam, maybe stippling the reflector with clear coat like Old-Lumens used to do. Or, if you’re going to diffuse the lens one way or the other, take the reflector out completely or paint it white. Anything but taking sandpaper to a lens. I’ve done that, and it looks horrid! :confounded:

Just my opinion.

I did a few S2+ lenses with sandpaper (180 grit 3M branded) and it took some time but it looks very nice now. The trick may be quality sandpaper and some perseverence. I will show the Q8 lens when it is finished

Ah Hah! The two things I didn’t have! Yeah, I’d like to see your results when you’re done.

Go by the gunsmith shop, have them hit the lens for a couple of seconds with bead blast media, voila! You might call and see when they’re going to be bead blasting, they like to set up work to get in the blaster and do everything and get out.

Or you could just leave like 3 lenses with them, ask for a light, medium and heavy blast whenever they get around to it. They might not even charge you anything, curious to see what you’re doing with it and such. lol
