Medium sized throwers

What about the Cometa/Z1/ThatLightWhichShallNotBeNamed?

Anyone ever test its kcd straight out of the tin?

Initially I intended to do reflector only, but why not…
I added ThatLightWhichShallNotBeNamed and B158B.
I didn’t add Cometa because I’m not aware of any seller offering it.
I didn’t add Z1 because stock it’s not really a thrower….or am I wrong?

The Z1 and Cometa (ie, unnamed clone) are essentially the same design, only the Jax uses a better lens and has some extra parts or something.

But they should be at least comparable.

I appreciate the list. I like me some throwers….
I have the lumintop GT Mini and the Lumintop ODL20c, emissar D1S.
I also have the Olight Javelot M3mx and it’s not on there (bummer)
Neither is my Thrunite TN32UT (bummer again).

Plan on adding to the list?

And BTW, the Amutorch JM70 II is now on my to-buy list. Thanks for costing me $$$
LOL

Another oldie but goodie.
My Imalent. DN35 26650 battery
With the DN 70 throwing even further I believe.

Mine cost $46 on coupon last yr. I take it on new walks
as it covers more than the C8T for looking around.

That JM70 must be a monster to be that good with an XP-L HI emmiter. Outperforms a lot of XHP35 HI lights. May have to see about grabbing one on sale.
Anyone like to share their thoughts after owning one?

Yeah, but Jaxman offers shorty Z1 only with XHP50 and XHP50.2. Technically not a single cell, but size-wise OK; with a throwy emitter it would make it to the list.
There’s also XM-L2 variant, but it’s 2*26650. And that may be called a thrower, but the LED choice shows that it’s not really dedicated to that task…
Am I missing something? Is what I say controversial?

One needs to set cut-offs somewhere. On the small side I was really tempted to include Acebeam L16. It wouldn’t be the least throwy light on the list. But then I would have to include lots and lots of other lights that are of similar size…
On the large side, I considered setting limits on:

  • number of cells
  • head diameter
  • empty weight
  • loaded weight

Number of cells matched my feeling of what a medium sized thrower is the most.
Olight Javelot M3mx doesn’t have the largest head. Unloaded weight isn’t the highest either. But length and loaded weight make it a large light to me….and Thrunite TN32UT is a beast.

That’s a useful list.

Just one thought, I think either Lumintop GT Mini should be removed from the list (as it’s smaller than C8) or the specs should change to something like “about the size of C8 or bigger” (that would be my vote) instead of “larger than C8”.

Acebeam L16 and Utorch UT02.

Thank you for the suggestion.
Just took a look….just like Acebeam L16 I would be very tempted to add DN35 to the list as the claimed 90 kcd is really nice and not even the lowest on the list. But it’s smaller than C8 and then I’d have to add a score of other lights as well…

Lumintop GT Mini has 50 mm head, C8 has ~45 mm. Though C8 is shorter.

ADDED:
If I added “about the size of C8” lights, I would still have to define some lower size limit. There will always be lights that are just a little smaller, but good performers….

Thanks for the suggestions. UT02 is already on the list. As I explained 2 minutes before you posted L16 would fit the list nicely but such addition would expand the list greatly due to the richness of the about-C8-sized-thrower ecosystem.

Wowtac A4 ?

Nice list you got going

What about claimed distance column?

Excellent list, very useful, especially the links to tested lux figures.

OTR X5 Pro

Regular XP-L or XM-L2 emitters don’t make for the best thrower but the dimensions definitely fit the bill.

Gotcha on the size thing. The tested lux figures are very helpful as we all know manufacturers embellish (and some are refreshingly conservative but rare).
I had no idea the Amutorch JM70II performs as well as it does so that was helpful.
Thanks again AGRO!

Nice!!

It’s dual cell and quite long…

I considered that. In a way I find it redundant - because it can be calculated from throw.
In a way I find it useful - because some of us are used to operating on kcd, some on throw, some on both. This would make the list more comprehensive for some users. OTOH too much data becomes confusing.
I for this reason I consider removing the “BLF UI” column.
BLFers, what do you think?

Added it to the list, thanks for the pointer.
I hesitated to do that because throw is really bad compared to the others here.
But is it a thrower? Certainly not a flooder. Not intermediate beam (which I call floower) either.
Do dimensions fit the pack? They do.
So it’s listed.
