What are thermals like at ~300 lumens and the level one lower?

Why an ATtiny13? Wouldn’t some sort of temp regulation be worthwhile based on the answer above?

Also, I’d be very happy if the light was a few mm longer and had a magnet, but that is by no means a deal breaker.

With a fresh cell mode 5 at ~300 lumens starts to get pretty warm at 2 minutes if you aren’t touching it. If you use your “meatsink” and switch hands often it can be run continuously without getting to hot to hold, but almost does. If your hands are cold it’s no problem. Measured 258 lumens at 4 minutes, 235 at 7 minutes and getting cool. Stopped test. Mode 4 only ever gets warm.

The driver development has been an iterative process. Tiny13a-mmu is 3x3mm 10mlf package. The more capable mcu’s are 20QFN package which is 4x4mm and a tighter squeeze, but doable. I have Tiny25, etc. drivers just about ready for fabrication now and they may end up in the light, in which case it will gain thermal regulation. Tiny13a can do thermal regulation but requires an external thermistor, and the protection would be basic mode reduction rather than something more complex. This was the plan for rev2 of the driver but now I’m probably moving to the more capable mcus which have on chip temperature sensors.

A magnet will most likely end up in the production light.

8+ cycles for a 30 second full turbo timer then it steps down?

Soft start is easier on the electronics and emitter as well as being easier on our eyes. Turbo or level 6 can do 700 lumens on a fresh cell, it will sort of ease into that brightness instead of slamming full brightness, hence soft start. At about 30 seconds it will gently ramp down to protect the light ftom getting too hot. You have to keep in mind this entire light is about the size of your pinky finger and the cell is AAA sized.

Bistro uses a soft start when cycling through the modes, most appreciate it, some don’t particularly care for it. Makes a lot of sense in a light this size for sure.

After re-reading my post it was a bit confusing, I was asking about the 8+ turns mode.

The turbo starts slowly ramping down after more like 5 seconds and ends up at mode 5 level after 20 seconds or so. Lumens measurements are usually taken at the 30 second mark. Instead of giving run time measurement from a continuous run, which would not be much different than mode 5 run time in that case, I ran the turbo multiple times for a total of 30 seconds each time. You can cycle the turbo 8+ times this way before lvp. There’s probably a better way to word it.

OH, so its the “number of cycles/runtime” equivalent for the turbo mode.

Does it take another 6 turns from mode 5, or just 1 to jump back to turbo?

Just 1 turn and it’ll do the turbo blast again but only if you let it go 20 seconds first.

It’s probably going to end up with thermal regulation rather than a timer though thanks to switching to a more capable mcu.

Is there a glass lens to protect the TIR or has the bare TIR been resilient enough ?

I do not see any glass in mine, but I have carried it a bunch loose in my pocket and have not scratched up the TIR. PMMA TIR’s seem to be very tough! Olight has been running the bare for years and most of mine are still in very good condition.

As a plus, the opening at the bezel is so small that most coins and such can’t enter the bezel to scratch the optic. :wink:
