Nitecore NU20 Teardown & Mods

Received this little light today, it's pretty cool, very lightweight & compact, I like it.

The light comes with an adjustable elastic band and mounting bracket for wearing on the head but I don't use them, I do however use magnets and thought a clip would be useful on this instead so it can be clipped to a t-shirt neckline or other clothing position.

I also saw an oportunity to install a little red LED operated by momentary switch, set to around 30mA.

I would recommend getting the Nichia version as reflowing the LED is not easy.

Opened up .

So you received this light today, stripped it, modded it assembled it (and it still works), well done. Weā€™ll have to get the Guinness Book Of Records around to your place soon. :+1:

Yeah stock lights and warranties last no more than a day around here

Well done !
I plan to buy one too and swap the emitter.
Is it a separate MCPCB or is the LED soldered on the main board ?

I was going to change the LED to a Nichia 219c but chickened out as the LED is on the main board along with all the other components, dual sided too and will be difficult, a heat gun and very steady hand would be required i think so if you want high CRI then get the Nichia version to start with.
The reflector is held in place by two prongs that go through the board, it just lifts off.

If anyone does want to open this up it is fairly easy by prying the back cover off but beware the component board is stuck to the cover with that white thermal glue and needs to be gently separated but itā€™s not too hard if you take your time.

Big thank you for the teardown and pictures!

Have you thought about replacing the reflector?
Iā€™m wondering if it would be possible to jam a 10mm TIR in thereā€¦
For example the 10413 or 10414 from Carclo which obviously would need to be modded a bit.
If Iā€™m ā€œreadingā€ the spec drawing correctly these are 6.4mm tall out of the box but if you remove the corner feet then itā€™s going to 5mm tall.

Hi there, welcome to the forum.
Why do you want a TIR instead of a reflector in there?

Thank you, long time lurker.

I just simply prefer the beam profile of TIR, I think thatā€™s the word Iā€™m looking for. Not as ā€œharshā€ hotspot and more uniform beam.

I donā€™t have the NU20 yet but as youā€™ve had it open, do you have any idea/recollection of the dimensions of the stock reflector? E.g. ballpark figures, not asking you to take measurements/tear it down again, Iā€™ll have it open eventually. (Edit: the height I mean)
At least one other review Iā€™ve seen has stated that the reflector diameter is 11.5mm and judging from your excellent photos it should not be impossible to swap the reflector for a TIR.

Cool, we like modders round here

The opening in the plastic case is about 12.9mm, I would say the reflector is about 14mm wide and maybe 7mm deep including the glass on top but thatā€™s just a guess.

Good to hear

Thank you again for your response and guesstimate figures. Those sound reasonable, should be possible.
Iā€™ll probably make a new thread when Iā€™ve done this.

I managed to get mine open without injuring myself  but it was way harder than I thought. You really have to cut it open.
Changing the LED works ok with a soldering iron and tweezers.
To get the back cover back on I used some epoxy.
It now has a LH351B 90CRI 3000K and some GITD tape in it

Thatā€™s great! Well done mate :+1:
