Stroopwafels

I bought a tin of these branded “Belgian Boys” at a local discount foods store a week or two ago. Never having heard of them I wasn’t over eager to open them. On reading this, I broke the double seal and tried one with coffee in the morning. I usually prefer dunker biscuits, (Biscoff, McVities) unlike these which soak up next to nothing from the coffee.

Butt these have there own merits. Nice thin crisp waffle sandwich with a thin caramel center. I offered one to my German wife and she took half the package. An upvote I believe. :+1:

They are one of my wife’s favorite treats. I myself are not a big fan of the wafels.

Have to look for these next time I am at the food stores.

Funny they’re called by their Dutch name over there.
Stroopwafel.
Stroop means syrup or molasses.
Wafel means waffle.

Prior to Christmas these two cans each held 8 stroopwafels. They did not last long.

Nice tins and good food. Trader Joe’s much nicer than Aldi’s imho.

Traditionally they were made with appelstroop, apple juice that was boiled until it had the consistency of thick syrup.

I will get you free stroopwafels whenever you visiting the Netherlands

Never heard that before.
Wonder if it’s accurate.
I even think stroopwafels go back further in history than apple juice.

If you like stroopwafels you should try gevuld speculaas:

For some reason, this triggers my excessive sugar detector.

But they look so goood.

Ooooh !!!
Now THAT’s some really good stuff right there !
Yummy !

Oh wow Polarweis! These are so good!
Don’t eat too much, because they’re quite heavy

Those do look very good. I see they use almond paste, a favorite.

Well, apples were originally grown for cider, not to eat as a fruit, and apple juice predates the wide availability of sugar (and thus sugar syrup or caramel), which only happened towards the end of the 18th Century, before that it was a luxury (then again so was cinnamon).

Last time I visited the Netherlands, I "suffered" with terrible "munchies".

There are many reasons to travel to the Netherlands. Free stroopwafels is one. May be time for another EU trip, we haven’t been there since the summer of 2010.

Other food I enjoy from there include… Krokets, Patats (with mayonnaise) and Bitterballen. Along with the bitterballen maybe a glass of Dubbel.

You found the right stuff Don, although I like triple better, or blond when I feel like a lighter beer.

To tease you a bit, I just came back from the pub, enjoyed bitterballen and a few IJndejaarsbier. Feels pretty good but the evening is not going to be very productive anymore. :innocent:

Stroopwafels are not expensive, so when any BLF member is nearby, i am more then happy on handing out stroopwafels or other Dutch treats

And Luftwafel means flying-waffle.

Ha!
