Short Review of Sofirn SP33 v2 with XHP50.2

The more I use the SP33 the more I like the UI. It is simple & straight forward. I really like the ability to jump up to Turbo & then go right back down to the brightness level you were at. Nice…… :+1:

To me it looks like they are copying our UI's, so this is all good! I dnld'ed the manual and it's NarsilM/Anduril in the basics, emphasizing the 1-click ON, 1-click OFF, press&hold to ramp, dbl-click to turbo, 4 clicks to lock out.

Just fyi if it hasn't been noted already, that white glue looks the same as the white glue used on the SP36 driver, and that stuff softens with heat.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I sliced and diced the stock emitter.

Measurements before:
20.5Kcd, 286 meters (a bit higher than my previous measurement of 18.5Kcd) and 2,200 lumen at about 20 seconds.

Measurements after:
27.5Kcd, 331 meters and 2,030 lumen at about 20 seconds.

The tint definitely shifted. Stock the SP33 v2 was definitely cooler in temp compared to the C8F 21700. Now they have flip flopped. The C8F is definitely cooler in temp. The SP33 hot spot used to be slightly bigger than the C8F, now it’s slightly smaller. (I adjusted the colors to best match what I’m seeing in person)

As with most NW emitters, they can look a bit yellow at lower output levels. The SP33 v2 sure looks more yellow, but on turbo it looks a bit less yellow. I imagine some people will prefer this. I’ll try it out this week to see if the new color, smaller hot spot, increased throw and slightly less output agree with me. I’ve got a stock 5700K as a backup just in case.

Mod pics for those interested:

I might be able to shave it a bit thinner, but it’s tricky and I didn’t want to damage it.

Besides slicing it, did you also do some scraping ? I sliced mine only. I see yellow pieces around your dome in the picture. Maybe if I had before and after pictures , I would notice a warmer tint, but I don’t notice much difference and have ordered a 5000k for replacement.

No scraping was necessary. The white area around the die used to be yellow phosphor. The yellow came off when I sliced the edges.

Look at this pic of a stock 50.2. You can see that the yellow phosphor covers the entire surface area. No white is visable.

I’m not sure how close Dale got to the edges of the die. He said it reduced the yellowish of the corona some, but my corona seems more yellow. IDK.

A buyer on the AE mentioned, that SP33 also works with 20700s and 21700s. Can anybody confirm that? Arent those too long?

No, I show right in post #1 where I use a Samsung 30T 21700 to measure output. As long as it’s an unprotected 20700 or 21700 it should fit.

I have a Sofirn 21700, a 30T and a 50E and they all fit (just barely).

Just an update, I swapped a new domed 50.2 back in my light after one day of the sliced dome. I didn’t like it. My entire spill light was yellow. It made things look wierd. The stock domed emitter is not the prettiest (meaning all 50.2 and 70.2 leds), but it seems a better compromise.

I’m thinking Sofirn should do a real OP reflector instead of this very light, almost SMO reflector that is stock. Then it would mix the yellow corona with the white hotspot and get a nicer looking beam. You loose throw, but it should look nicer. I consider this a short range, walking around type of light anyway.

I DC Fixed my dedomed SP33 but still not liking the color. Nicer beam pattern though.

I have a stock SP33 that I accidentally dropped and the glass cracked… anyone know where I can get a good, inexpensive replacement lens?

The first thing I would do is contact Sofirn to see if they can sell you a replacement.

Also, you can measure the diameter and check stores that carry flashlight parts like Kaidomain.

Parts from China should be cheap. There is a USA store FlashlightLens.com - Your source for high quality glass and acrylic flashlight lenses. - Flashlightlens.com - Online Store
That can certainly have it, but it’s probably more expensive.

My 5000 K XHP 50.2 came in today .Totally messed up the swap. I should of taken the new emitter off the new 20mm board and put it on the 26mm board that comes stock in the SP33. Instead I installed the 20mm board thinking there was clearance between the soldier joints and the reflector. Well there is if you keep the soldier blob real low but mine shorted . That in itself would not have put the kabash on things but when I removed the lens , the gasket stuck in it and pulled off the dome. Talk about a purple beam. Long story short, put the original emitter back in and I am back to where I started. Oh well. Modding 101.

I dont like that after the turbo is gone due to low voltage you have to double click for high

Thank you DBC and Teacher for using my XHP70.2 dedome thread as a reference!
I ordered an SP33 and soon I will try XHP50.2 too.

Ok definitely time for me to upgrade from my panny bs!

Quick question Jason tho… how are the “5500mAh” Sofirn cells that are included in the kit on amazon?

I have a bunch that I just use as backups. Just ordered some of the black Shocklis from Richard and plan on buying more unless there are even better cells I should be considering??

From post 177.

I was told by Sofirn that their 5000 and 5500 are basically the same cell, but some gave higher capacity and are labeled 5500mah, while the lower ones are labeled 5000mah.

The Shockli 5500 is a superior battery. A real 5750 or so mah and good at delivering high amps. I think it came out in either 2017 or 2018 so it’s quite a modern cell. I use it in my SP33 and get longer battery life than any of my other 4300-5000mah cells.

Thanks guys. that’s interesting to me at least

Does the xhp50.2 version come in neutral white or is it a typo? I think they copied and pasted from the xpl version but not sure. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Sofirn-SP33-Mini-Powerful-Led-flashlight-18650-torch-light-CREE-XPL2-LED-Mini-Handy-flashlight-6/32831075588.html

It says 5350K-5700K, but it’s more cold white. More towards 5700K or maybe even 6000K. I would not call it neutral white.

I just received mine from Sofirn official shop and it's indeed cool white but that's no surprise as Sofirn advertise it as 6000-6500K.

I would be carefull about what is said in your link as the only color temp "5350k-5700k" mention is in the "clicky order thingy" and the pictures that show the led aren't from an xhp50.2 (obviously smaller led)

I don't like cool light neither and my idea was to order the one from Sofirn shop and change the led for a warmer one if i really dislike it.

Got it only two hours ago so i have no tested it for real yet but my first thought when powering it for the first time was "uuuuh what a ugly green ring" wich seems to be typical for xhp50.2 with reflector
