EMPs, LEDs, and Lithium B...s

Map shows voltages induced per meter of conductor (I think).

So how would each of these fare during an EMP event?

LED light — on or off, with or without battery installed (or would the distinctions even matter).

Li-ion — installed in a device versus standing alone, protected vs. not

LiFePo4 — same as above, distinct from Li-ion or no?

Surely a trusty old Mag-lite with alkalines and incandescents would survive just fine? Right?

LED Light: No problem at all, especially inside of an aluminium tube.

All kinds of cells: Unprotected cells will never be affected.

Protected will probably never be affected too, but they have higher standby drain, so I do not recommend them.

I would never trust alkaline not to leak. I would just buy a good 2xAA light, put in lithium primaries, and lock it mechanically if it doesn’t have a tailswitch.

I’ve wondered about this as well. I’ve wrapped up a couple of S2’s that I’d bought when they were on sale with triple layer of heavy duty alum foil and slipped them into my faraday cage coughgarbage can**cough. I’m thinking that since it doesn’t take many more than 5 volts to fry a LED, they’ll all be non-operable. However, that might depend on so many things, they are in metal tubes already getting some shielding, if they were in the basement and the air burst was far away……?

Yeah, I have no idea. Better safe than sorry, and I’ve alredy modded my maglight to run LED’s…so that idea sounded good……but….:slight_smile:

Are you sure man? Hundreds of volts (even at very low amperages) across those tiny little chips on an LED driver board wouldn’t fry them?

The metal body of the flashlight would be its downfall though. It would act as an antenna and ramp up the voltage by an order of magnitude or two, with the voltage easily jumping the switch gaps and completing a circuit throughout. At least, that’s my very amateur guess.

Flashlights should be on the bottom of your list of things to worry about, if an EMP hits say Colorado 80 - 90% of all people in the USA will die in the following 12 to 18 months according to our latest briefing back in December 2018.

HDS claims their flashlights are EMP proof and were tested. I wonder how they make it EMP proof?

Flashlights in general should be unaffected by EMPs because they don’t contain any long conducters. In addition to this the metal body functions as a farady cage, only the glass lens poses a risk (can be solved with a metal cover).

its general hype, similar to the claim that HDS can survive being shot… so can other flashlights…
its a metal tube, that makes it EMP proof, and tends to resist shots…

and Henry did not say the HDS is EMP proof, he said he sees no reason why it would not be
Henry also did not say he tested an HDS for EMP, just that it passes the CE tests, like zillions of other flashlights… more below

Hogokansatsukan confirmed they were EMP proof and also that they were tested. It was posted very recently in the other forum.

Yes, all lights that pass CE are passing the same test. I quoted from the other forum in detail. Just about any metal flashlight constitutes a faraday cage. This is not unique to HDS. Its true for all flashlights that pass CE testing… no big deal…

Im not trying to be rude, it just feels like Im shouting, the emperors xp-g3 has green tint! and the answer comes back, “not in real life, thats not green, its yellow”. Then I go back to my rose colored glasses, and all is well.

disclaimer, I bought and paid for my HDS, so Im entitling myself to call bullshit when I see it… hype is hype, thats not to say that the light sucks, it doesn’t. Just calling a spade a spade. Read all about my HDS here
