Help Me Buy A Convoy S2+

For most people C8’s are much harder to carry around as an EDC. So it all depends on what one’s usage and needs are. And one’s definition of better depends on what one wants the light for. I have 5 or so C8’s and about the same number of S2 size lights and I never use the C8’s other than lighting up my walls :sunglasses:

Rough calculations, but should be close to this:

1050mA = 282lm
1400mA = 375lm
2100mA = 562lm
2800mA = 750lm

In any case, I’d say just go for broke and pick the x8 option. If you think full blast is too much or spending the battery too fast, you can always set it to a mode group with a lower max. I did that with my M1 and two S2’s and haven’t regretted it - 50% max power is pretty legit already for all my needs.

Word. I never carry my C8 because of that huge head it has, though the tight beam compels me to use it at home a lot. It’s especially good to light up the wall clock on the other side of the living room from the computer and sofa :sunglasses:

Just Bought This ……… Now For The Shipping Wait……. Yay

Quick Question On This Purchase:

Q: Does this light have low voltage protection? I normally use protected cells, but I have some 18650 unprotected leftover form my Vaping days. Always good to use leftover stuff.

Thanks for all your advise everyone ……… Knobby

:smiley:

Yes, since it has the Biscotti user interface, it does have low voltage protection.

You’ll love the light :slight_smile:

Excellent choice! The high CRI light is really something else. Its not only about the lumens number but also the quality.

Same as me, only I asked for a black host and a 4000K LED.

Sig and Jack.
Horses for courses. We all different. I’m a 50yr Vegetarian
and can’t stand reality shows etc, on teev.
I find the S2 skinny and slippy on hand. Relax your grip
It’s on the floor.
The large Head on C8 holds it in place.
Later model C8/+ have spread of S2 with much more throw I find.
They have some “shape” to them too.
not just a bit of water pipe with globe on the end.
C8+ a Niice looking torch.

But there again. I think the Imalent 08 a lovely wide spread comfortable to hold torch too. Weird hey?. I got no chance.

Hehe, we’re not THAT alien to each other then :sunglasses: I’m 28, really enjoy vegetarian food for a change of pace, and definitely agree that the C8 line is nice to hold in the hand. With an OP reflector, mine works at any distance thanks to the versatility of Biscotti. The only problem I have with the format is that it doesn’t agree with my trousers’ pockets half the time, which isn’t a problem when the torch doesn’t leave my paw.

I love my C8’s, some hot rods and some stock. Don’t have a Convoy one though. If I have to spend a lot of time carrying it in my hand then for sure the C8 but, if I want to put it in a pocket until it’s needed then the tube type S2+ is a winner. Both great, both have pros and cons. C8, too big for pocket. S2 type, try and find a GOOD pocket clip for them.

I am not vegetarian but I like eating vegetarians, cows are vegetarians, deer are vegetarians. I call it a win win. :slight_smile:

Cheers ya’ll.

Any idea of the throw one might expect from the S2+ SST-20 with 7135*8 and SMO reflector in High mode? This would be important in my purchase decision. Thanks!

Haven’t used SST-20s in any reflector based light myself but they are certainly throwier than the X-PL HI. AFAIK there shouldn’t be anything weird with the reflector in the S2 that affects throw like the issues people were having with Osram flats in the D1S for example.

With the 95CRI version, you will be getting about the same throw as the XP-L HI, so 230-250m of max throw.

It’s very throwy for such a small light.

On that thought: wouldn’t it be better to use an S2 instead of an S2+ with the SST20? The deeper reflector lends itself to throw better than the S2+’s shallow one.

I like an S2,an s6 and s2+,A6 etc .. The earlier C8's were about as ugly a light as anyone could come up with . I've always liked the Eagle eye x6 or the Twain clone ...Simons new C8's are a much much better look and feel and his colors finally got away from that stupid pastel red green blue garbage .I suggested deep rich dark interesting colors like the big boys put on their lights and instead he listened to J-dub and wasted a year making an ugly green instead of the sand or army grey/green etc . For years Simon had very average emitter choices with very few real choices . His new choices of emitters including the nichia and sst20 etc is exactly what we told him years ago ...and how convoy even ever got on the map in the first place .It was his partnering up with Fasttech and the miryid of emitter choices that made Convoy lights so popular in the first place . the reason they got away from this winning combination is beyond me .IMHO Simon squandered opportunity by wasting time with stupid colors,bad emitter options and dumb 3/5 drivers as well as screwing up the early version of biscotti/probably using junk out of spec parts ?? IDK I'm glad to see him on the right track again .

Personal preference, I guess. I actually like the looks of the original C8 more than the new one. It’s a classic of sort.

A 240 m (≈ 14 kcd) throw is a little more than the ∞ 12 kcd my current EDC Thorfire TG06S provides - so it would work for me. Would you happen to know if there is a short 18350 tube available for the S2+? Edit: I see that Simon sells the S2+ 18350 tube. Would the BLF A6 18350 tube work? Thanks!

FWIW, I measured my S2+ XPL-HI 3A as having 15.4K cd beam intensity.

Yes, there is a S2+ 18350 tube available. I can’t remember if my A6 tube fits - I can try.

EDIT: My 18350 A6/Astrolux S1 tube does not work with my Convoy S2+, but I know there have been various A6/S1 shorty tubes out there - maybe another one does.

Amen to that! I am a huge fan of the Classic C8’s looks. The C8+ is also pleasing, but the aesthetic style is completely different, I can’t even compare the two.
