[Unboxing] LuminTop ZOOM1

I get min Tomm…im ok with the zoom in…but hows the zoom out? I hope its ok.

Out isn’t bad, but retains some of the squarish shape. It could stand to go a little further out and get more round.

Funny to say, but the cometa spoiled me. Although I do have a white flat and l4p driver in mine.

Took my Zoom1 apart tonight because it wasn’t all that happy the way it sits anyway.

Lumintop zoom1 teardown

Measured draw at the emitter too. Once I got the pill unscrewed from the head.
04a L
0.50a M
1.19a H
2.29a (double click turbo)

Used a UT210E directly on the emitter wire with a VTC5a installed fresh off the charger.

Might be able to drop a white flat right in.

Any updates on modding this light? Martin has a deal goin on this light now: https://m4dm4x.com/m4d-m4x-deals/

From the teardown above, looks like a driver replacement would be easy. Guess all depends on the optics and focusing.

Thank you for the review Steel. Once again, your pictures are amazing!! :+1:

Ohh, yes - thanks Steel! Excellent pics!!

I have to say that I really like what I see here:

  • 21700 cell, 40 mm head, not very long - nice format, must feel good in hand
  • e-switch
  • USB charging
  • push-pull action
  • probably - Lumintop’s good overall quality

Lumintop chose to use a partially frosted lens to smooth out the beam. Fair choice. I suppose it avoids the problems with a hole in the beam in intermediate zoom positions.

With the versatility that zoom1 offers it could easily become one of my most used lights.

There are several things that could make it better and most seem to be achievable with modding skills somewhat above mine.

  • Lumintop, if you go for beam quality - how about adding high CRI options?
  • Narsil / Andruil would be awesome
  • XHP35 HI seems like a natural choice for this light with its better efficiency, better throw and easily double Turbo output ( GXB172  ).
  • Type C….Lumintop offers it in several lights already and I wonder - why not this one?
  • How about adding a powerbank function?

With these changes….that would be nearly a dream light.

I dropped in a white flat. Had to sand the mcpcb a tiny bit. It was a 16mm, needed to be 15 or so to fit the cap that covers it. Super east mod other than the sanding. I used a Dremel with sanding wheel.

Kept the driver the same. Long press to off kinda sucks.

Meh, still. Hotspot, zoomed out, is still too big. Not nearly zoomed in enough to get a clear die shot. Needs another few mm of outward movement.

I got 16,314cd with the oslon. Didn’t bother with the stock emitter.

21700 will not fit out of the box, gotta buy their tube. Quality is good, just not happy with the short zoom distance.

16 kcd with white flat and 40 mm head? That’s bad. :frowning:
I guess the host deserves further improvements on the Lumintop side….

Here’s the zoom 1 with white flat ~20” diameter at 10’ 16kcd(max)
Zoomed all the way to the smallest beam

Here’s the cometa with white flat ~4” diameter at 10’ 334kcd(max)
Zoomed all the way to the smallest beam

and for reference, l2 with white flat ~5-6” diameter at 10’ 464kcd(max)

Oh boy, definitely not a thrower, unless figuring out a way to extend the lens out more.

Removing the optic and holding it further from the emitter yielded 59kcd with the zoom1. Beam pattern was nearly identical to the cometa in this configuration.

Lower current than the l4p drivers i’m using in the other lights.

This was very close to the optic being flush with the end of the head (bezel removed), and zoom fully extended outward. I don’t see a realistic way to mod it without a new head.

Ok, it's a flooder with the ability to narrow and lengthen the flood zone

i wonder how many lumens lost at maximum zoom

Atleast 50, probably closer to 75.
You don’t get a zoomie cause you care about lumens…

From flood to zoom mine reads 440lm then 338lm. My sphere (spherical one) is baffled at both sides of the sensor.

About 77% of the value when zoomed in tight, so a 23% loss

edit: May be a bit low on both readings. Just put the battery back on the charger. Was at 3.84v for the readings I got above.

Depends on the type of zoom and how well done.

With an aspheric lens type zoomie, you can easily lose 50-75% of the total lumens when cycled to spot mode. This is because the light is emitted from the LED in a wide cone, and most of this cone hit the sides of the sliding bezel rather than the lens when the bezel is extended for spot mode.

With a zooming TIR mechanism like on an LED Lenser, the light loss when cycling from flood to spot can be as little as 0%. This is because in theory all parts of the LED’s emission cone are collected by the optic and directed out the front in both flood and spot positions.

However, not all LED Lenser type optics are created equal. I’ve seen some where there is no visible lumen loss in a ceiling bounce test. But I’ve seen others where significant lumens are still lost.

I take it all back… 464 lumens at zoom out, followed by 388 focused tight. 83.6% or a reduction of 16.4% Battery hot off the charger in both instances.

Not much loss because it doesn't zoom fully - it's a zoom'n flooder.

led lenser’s zoom system doesn’t lost many lumens at maximum zoom, so at same size and same lumen, their light will throw furrther

Actually not really.

Throw is determined primarily by the width of the relevant reflector or optic.

LED Lensers lose almost no light into the bezel when cycled to spot mode because almost all of the light is redirected by the optic out the front. However, in practice this does not make them throw much further than a similar diameter aspheric light. The output will be similar in intensity (throw) as an aspheric, but the spot is bigger and illuminates a wider area.

You can get a similar effect by substituting a typical long focal length aspheric lens for a short-focal length aspheric lens. The short focal length lens sits close to the LED and captures much more of the cone of light coming off the LED. The long focal length one wastes much more light into the sides of the bezel. But assuming the lenses are the same diameter the throw is probably the same. The only difference is the short focal length lens projects a bigger and wider image of the LED die.

Generally, if you want more throw you need a more intense emitter or a wider optic/reflector.
