Lumintop GT micro

Guess what I just find waiting for me when I got home? It arrived! Along with a Lumintop EDC05C, interesting, because I know I was interested in it but didn't order it, and thought they never made it? Oh boy - I gotta talk to Neal...

This is all I could not on it, twitter: https://twitter.com/lumintop/status/1022791799192973314

Anyways, back to the micro - wow, it's small!!

seems you got a gift ;)

Yes, Neal did that to me a few months ago too, with two drivers that I requested came a Mateminco X6S. I did a small review as a thanks, and then found out it was heavily reviewed already :person_facepalming:

But that looks like a cool little EDC!

@TomE
let me know what you think ;)

The EDC05C is D-E-D right now, gotta try a charge. Can't see a way to get at the battery - might be the SS tail embedded cap unscrews. Will check it out down in the flashlight lab...

I must have been on FB with Neal talk'n bout it, and just forgot. Think they were gonna release it months ago, then it didn't happen. FB is acting up on me, real slowwwww right now so can't check. I've been interested in the dual LED lights like the SD Mini II which I have running with a special mod to NarsilM and cut/jumpered a driver to separate the 7135 from the FET - it works pretty well now.

EDIT: Ohhh, ok. The EDC05C's tail can unscrew with a regular screw driver or slim coin I suppose - sure enough there was no battery in it. UI works pretty well:

  • lo/mid/hi on the main LED, plus press&hold from OFF to access a low low
  • Dbl click from OFF or ON to switch to the side light, then lo/mid/hi on the side panel - pretty bright on a WindyFire 14500
  • press&hold to turn OFF, clicks to switch thru lo/mid/hi

The bezel is not notched so hope can use friction to unthread the bezel - if so, then should get access to the main LED and driver. Main LED looks like a CW XPL HI, with an OP reflector.

The GT Micro doesn't have a driver spring, but what looks like a button contact - I had one 14500 that couldn't make contact, but the button tops I got worked fine (gold VapCell 1000 mAh, EFEST 650's, etc.). In the tailcap it has the double spring we expect.

I got the NW version and doesn't seem to be a well defined hot spot, but maybe because of the small reflector. Tint is nice, maybe a little heavy on yellow in the corona. Seems like a warmer NW, maybe a 5A/5B/5C or so. The 5D's I got look better, but haven't carefully compared them. 5D - comparing the,. looks very much like my 5D's in other lights.

Using a gold Vapcell 1000 mAh BT at 4.20V:

  • on max ramp: 1.93 amps, on turbo: 3.3 amps
  • on max ramp lumens: 586 (TomE) or 516 ANSI, both at start
  • on turbo lumens, start-15 secs: 1020-945 (TomE), or 900-839 ANSI
  • throw on turbo: 53 kcd (460 meters) taken at 5 meters

It's a nice look'n little pocket light. The new higher capacity 14500's are a good match. I got 4 of the gold Vapcell 1000's. I'll re-do the tests on a new EFEST 650 BT to compare.

Update:

Using a new EFEST 14500 flat top from MtnE @4.20V, I got much better results. Should be expected because it's rated up to 6.5 amps, plus flat tops are better:

  • on max ramp: 3.6 2.6 amps, on turbo: 5.0 amps
  • on max ramp lumens: 740 (TomE) or 650 ANSI, both at start
  • on turbo lumens, start-15 secs: 1275-1160 (TomE), or 1125-1020 ANSI
  • throw on turbo: 62 kcd (498 meters) taken at 5 meters

The Micro is still all stock at this point.

The obvious light to directly compare to is the Emisar D1, being they are similar size and similar head diameter. The D1 has the big advantage of an 18650 cell, but for some reason, I'm getting better throw #'s from the Micro, least what I measured back when I first got the D1 in it's stock setup. It should be noted the Micro has a deep reflector, and the diam/depth ratio seems to match exactly to the GT Mini - fairly narrow compared to most other small lights that dont' have the reflector depth this light has. It's an interesting difference, pretty unique for the Micro in such a small light.

Cool Tom, glad to see it came in (with surprises)

Mine should be here Friday…

Great review, excited to receive mine…

I hadn’t heard about those before. It sounds really promising!

I like the form factor of 14500 lights, but the low-mAh batteries are a drawback. So it’s nice to hear about higher capacities being made.

Those 1000 mAh cells are sold under different brands I believe. Went nuts last night trying to find where/when I ordered these from, I think I have 4, definite 3 on hand.

Jon on Liionwholsale has them here though. The SANYO 840 mAh 14500's have been around a long time. I got a bunch but they are old, still expensive to buy - Richard sells them.

* Ahh - found it! I ordered qty 3 of the VapCell's from illumn back in December, here: https://www.illumn.com/14500-vapcell-icr14500-1000mah-3a-high-discharge.html

I tried to get cells from Liion Wholesale yesterday and the shipping rstes were ridiculous! Cancelled out and went over to IMRBattery where cell prices were a little higher but shipping was only $5.99 UPS Ground. Ordered yesterday and they will be here today.

I saw those 1000mAh Vapcells but current was so low they didn’t interest me at all. IMR was sold out on the Purple Efest 14500’s.

High capacity is good for running at lower power levels, but for Turbo on the Micro you might want the high drains.

Yea, something happened with Liionwholesale shipping costs - agree, they are ridiculous now - for me, $7.50 for qty 4 of 14500's. Illumn, same order, shipping is $5, and they are west coast.

They'll be losing some biz for sure. For me, orders would have to be big with them.

Comparing Illumn vs. Liionwholesale for qty 4 Vapcell 14500's, $19 for Illumn, $24 for Liionwholesale. For these, Illumn is cheaper on the batts, cheaper on shipping.

Just got my shipping confirmation from Neal… pretty excited. I ordered the CW version; think this will be a fun light to carry around.

Still unfulfilled as of this afternoon… :weary:

Weh mir, oh weh…

My two GT micro lights and batteries just arrives.
Small…
Tested and they both looks fine.
(A little “flickering” on both, at the lower end of the ramp, and then it stops.) !!??
Thanks to all involved.

The little flicker might be when it switches from the FET to the 7135. I can see it in mine as well. It’s barely noticable.

Also keep in mind that narsil gives a single quick blink at the bottom and top of the ramp. This might be what you’re describing, the blink at the bottom.

I forget, is this a FET + 1? I think so.

Mine are to be delivered today via DHL, the wait continues…. lol

Yes, sounds like the normal fast blink to show you reached the max or min.

I'm finding this little bugger can throw pretty well. It's beating my D1 with the D1 having a big advantage of an 18650 cell. Of course the problem is the Micro won't last for very long...

DHL just left, I eagerly rushed in the house and ripped open the bag, cut the tape on the box inside, pulled out the bubble wrapped black box… huh? A Fireflies box? Not 2 GT Micro’s? Nope, a black Fireflies E07 with a Samsung 40T inside it.

:person_facepalming:

I paid $90 for an E07 with a cell.

And the wait continues…
