ALL THINGS BUDGET KNIVES

I have this Ganzo and its a very good knife with axis lock but the fit and finish is rough, good for the money and the design (stolen from Ontario Rat) but far behind the Sanrenmu Land.
The Land 9103 is easily the best budget knife for the money! This knife is just perfect with excellent steel and should worth much more.
Gocomma knifes I don’t have any but they look like random noname cheap knifes and I really don’t like the design of them.

Sanrenmu = Land = Ruike = Real Steel = OEM for big knife brands

@ Omega_17 … Spend $9.99 on one of the GoCommas we are talking about & I bet you will change your mind real quick.

The fit n’ finish is much better than any of the Ganzos I have & as I have said before…. equal to any of my Benchmades & better than a few of them I am sad to say. Sad because I love my Benchmades… but it is what it is.

There is nothing cheap looking about the GoComma when you are holding it in your hand.

Okay, if customs is all good then I’ll skip the ganzo and check out the Ontario Rat, but the other two sound good.

Thanks everyone for your assistance!

I also love that GoCommas and can recommend them.

Can someone recommend a tool to sharpen knives?
Something not too expensive…

The only thing about the SRM Land 910+ and 9104 that I didn’t like was its weight so I just made cf scales for the 910+ and a single cf front scale for the 9104.

Never gonna do that again, countersinking ball bearings and washers on the inside and the screw head on the outside and then allign all the other holes was way too much work
I wish they’d do a G10 version with a fat G10 front scale though, tough enough for most jobs and much lighter than 2 steel liners, even when skelletonized.

I don’t know if it will break your bank but the best I’ve found for an all arounder is the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

@ Adahn Very nice work!! :open_mouth: . :+1: . I bet that was a job getting that all lined up correctly….

A cheap sharpening option:

I have a couple of Land 910+'s and I love them. and yes I can see what others have said about the weight but I don't mind it ...I'm never left wondering which pocket it's in !

The go,comma might be worth having a crack at.

I believe flippers aren't the problem for AU customs, the issue might be that it's 'assisted'. It'd be nice if the sellers could disable the feature for us to just re-enable it when they arrive.

I don’t have one, but I have heard the Spyderco is very good.

I have stones, but I rarely use them now.

I have some crock sticks similar to these…

They work well & were relatively cheap compared to the Spyderco.

I have a couple of Lansky kits that I use if I need to reprofile an edge. It works well if you take it slow & pay attention to what your doing.

You can check out YouTube & see some how some people use finer grits of wet/dry sandpaper with great results. I have used this and it also works well.

You will probably laugh, but when I just need to touch up an edge; I just grap a dinner plate that has an unglazed edge on the bottom & use that.

If your not familiar with sharpening, whatever system you choose; the main thing is practice. Get an old kitchen knife & practice with it. Practice holding your chosen angle correctly. Practice until you can make that bad boy hair popping sharp. Then… graduate to your better knives.

Sooner or later you’ll be able to use the bottom edge of a dinner plate to bring back a hair popping edge on any knife.

edit for spelling correction

Yeah, practice is best when it comes to knife sharpening. Another important thing is to do regular maintenance so as not to have a need for more work later on. Less aggressive removal of material, no need to kill the blade.

Found the RAT2 for $50AUD locally so it might just be worth avoiding the hassle of customs and go local.

edit:: helps if I read stock levels

Thank you Relampago

I will probably go for Spyderco.

:+1:

Really?? You must have big hands??
I actually do not like the shape of the handles on the original 3 or 4. I was glad when they came out with the ESEE-3HM & ESEE-4HM. I like these handles really well. Picture of the ESEE-3HM below.
.

I use these compact and inexpensive Lansky crock sticks:

What I love about ceramic and carbide sticks is that I can get a working edge with like 5 passes.

Family picture :

Land (SRM) changed the name of some of their knives (like the 9104 became 913, green 910 became 911, ...) a few monthes ago.

All of them are pretty good knives with a good finish and sharp enough out of the box.

The small one on the top is my edc. I got several of the same kind on GB while they where on sale and no "washed" 7010 was available. I didn't like the shiny black coating too much and the sharp edges (frame, blade back) were very uncomfortable on such a small knife so i decided to soften everything with fine sand paper and steel wool and i am very pleased with the result (reflexion on the picture makes it look more "white" than it is for real).

I don't know what steel it is made of but i am using it everyday for food, cardbox, whatever and need to sharpen it less than once a month.

The 9xxx are pretty big knives and that's why i love them (i used to carry an INRON MY802 as edc for long time) but because of terrorism paranoia there is now too much a chance to get in trouble carrying such knife where i live so i eventually went with the 7010 : still supposed not to be allowed (no lock allowed) but the smaller size and nice look (hey flowers !) makes it easier to carry and less frightening.

I have not used the 811 "for real" enough to have an opinion so all i can say is it looks as good as the others.

/\ Nice “family picture”, thanks for sharing. :+1:

You bet right

But it was worth it

Now I’m thinking about making a scale for my SRM 813. Not sure if I’ll make it before I tried my dc supply for anodizing
