Actually a smart form factor. Nearly identical to the ET TX25C2 which I’ve always regarded as the ideal “turbo” EDC. I just wish Luminus would offer the hi CRI in the sst40. This light probably will just burn straight through sst20s. Too bad…

Even an 90CRI SST-40 4000k would be so good, like the SST-20.

IMO, they would just plow Cree at that point in this segment, since it would be a high CRI 5050 3V emitter.

It says “battery discharge no big than 10A , Or it will cause damage to the emitter.” … I really don’t like that.

That's the issue with the SST-40 when using an FET driver. koef3 discovered that more than 7.4A may decrease the LEDs lifespan significantly and beyond 9A those bonding wires are subject to burn, causing the ultimate death of the LED.

Best argument for using Luxeon V instead ;) Kaidomain even has some in (claimed) 5000K and 6500K, in addition to the 4000K that Led4Power has had for a while.

Why not get the Luxeon V 5000k then?

I ordered the FT03 with the SST40, it’s also FET drive on turbo, does it mean that I will burn it if the battery is more than 10A? I didn’t see that anywhere in their description, and I also do not own any 26650 that does below 15A at worse… I really would not like to kill the light the first day.

Did you find out whether that is the case? I’m also wondering about it as I have also ordered the FT03, and already have the Astrolux FT03 SST40-W, which uses a Texas Avenger FET Driver.

I’m currently in the process of reevaluating my battery choice on that one.

Not yet, and nobody gave me any insights. I also tried googling but didn’t find anything. I’m wondering why use a FET if the LED has problems with it…

Please do not confuse battery ratings for how it will will perform in a light.

They designed the circuit in the FT03 with a little extra resistance to limit the current.

Thank you for the reply! Of course I do not confuse, the Fireflies E01 is the first light that I know of that can kill the LED if the battery is “too powerfull”, as they say on their official web site.
So if the FT03 does not have that issue, it means simply that the driver of the E01 was not engineered very well.

No, it’s that the E01 was engineered too well.

Everything in a Fireflies light is made to have as low resistance as possible.
They should’ve just used a more suited LED for this purpose, like an LH351D 5000k 70CRI.

I hope there will be more LED choices soon then.

I received a couple of E01s today and they seem like very nice lights, there are lots of things i like such as the size/shape, beam pattern, switch lights, ramping, but… instead of concentrating on the good things i need to point out that i don’t think they’re actually running Anduril as claimed. Mine are missing most of the blinkies, and muggle mode, and here: ANDURIL USER MANUAL & LIST OF LIGHTS - #25 by blueb8llz Blueb8llz explains a problem programming the ramp levels on the E01, while 4 posts later TK explains:

I see, so the FF E01 uses a stripped-down version of Anduril, but it’s a different variant than the RampingIOSv3 of the D4S.

How difficult would it be to re-flash the firmware of the E01? (does it have contact points similar to the D4S)?

Is there a reason I haven’t seen a manufacturer using a Luxeon V in a light like this? It copes with the high current better and has beautiful tint even though it’s not hi cri surely it would have made a reasonable choice for the E01? Or am I totally wrong?

I bet it has something to do with it’s odd 4mm x 4mm foot print. Most leds use either 3.5mm or 5mm. You need a special mcpcb to fit the Luxeon V. If you fit it by hand you might be able to get it on a 3.5mm pad, but it’s tricky. Maybe too tricky for mass production.

Fair enough, but a manufacturer could surely make the correct mcpcbs or get them in? Oh well.

Flashlight companies (most, not all) just focus on the main parts like the body. Things like reflectors, drivers, switches and mcpcb come from specialty manufacturers. Then the flashlight company assembles the parts.

Right now I only know of one store, LED4POWER, that has had some 4x4 mcpcb made up to sell.

It’s pretty odd there aren’t many factory flashlights with the Luxeon V. Maybe it’s not a cost effective led compared to it’s competition? IDK. We’d probably need to ask a flashlight company to really find out. It might be something as simple they are hard to buy in bulk in China. Or maybe the nice tints are hard to get.
