My Imalent DX80 caught fire, vented smoke, almost exploded (replacement head arrived)

if i had not quickly un-threadded the battery tube to release the building pressure in the head and cut off the current, (which is where the venting hot smoke burned my hand) it would have likely blown out the lens sending glass shrapnel forward, or worse.

Glad to hear you were not hurt.

You have to kinda expect things like this when buying high-power and particularly multi-cell Chinese flashlights.

DBSAR, glad to hear you dodged the bullet….Whooohhhhhh… Burns are nasty business… Hang in there. :open_mouth: !!

Very, very glad your cells didn’t vent. Cells venting is indeed terrifying and I’m sure we’ve all watched the videos.

(I’m a vaper so I’ve looked into it extensively)

Only about a month ago it actually reached another level… A Texas man had his vape set wrong and was drawing way to many amps so it vented. The difference between his situation and all the rest was that it exploded with so much force it launched a piece of shrapnel into his neck which tore his carotid artery and killed him.

That’s a 1-2 cell set-up with light metal. The DX80 with 8 cells and thick aluminum could’ve become a pipe bomb

Thanks for reporting this.

Newlumen’s MS12 had a fan that didn’t work. He surprisingly received a full MS12 replacement after many, many months of reporting the problem and we all thought would be hopeless.

I did a test once forcing a 18650 to vent inside a working flashlight. its on my youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6acpwEqp5zg&t=96s

Wow, I’m interested to hear what Imalent’s reaction is to this. I know stuff happens and there are faults in production with anything but this could have been worse than it was.

I’m uploading a video now explaining the DX80 incident, will be online shortly. (I sent Imalent an email inquiring on it, but unknown when i will hear back, or if i will hear back…

Great video. also couldn’t help but laugh midway through to the haaawwwkrrr pheww lol

ya that’s what I expected. now amplify the cells by 8 and cause the venting by heat (looks like you did it by short circuit?). I’ve seen youtubes where they force venting by use of a heat gun and that consistently provides the most explosive results

ok here is a quick video explaining the DX80 incident from last night:

its just scary how it worked well and then like a ticking bomb it went off… that light should be sent back to imalent i dont know so they can look into what happend if they want, they should pay for shipping back and show they take this serious because its getting out of hand with the QA issues with this light and others too, but this is just on a different level what happend.

Imalent just advised that they’ve solved the problem!!

All new and currently for sale Imalent lights will now include the necessary protective gear which should be used at all times when operating, handling or charging their flashlights:

I am glad you are okay and something really bad didn’t happen. They should replace that without questions and with apologies.

One day someone is going to get killed by these crap lights, not if but when.

Not ALL Imalent are bad.
I have 2 x DN series. (35/70)
and they probably my most used lights when I go outside with one.
Several yrs and not a missed a beat.
although when you on near max output/capacity with torches,
You also nearer to Whoopsy too.
Glad you weren’t burnt or eyes damaged.

PS.
“”Thanks for the pictures, that looks rather frightening. Imagine this happened in a car while driving or similar””
——————————

I would hope you wouldn’t be playing with a torch. OR anything else while driving.

Wow…. Glad to hear you are basically OK DBSAR.
Thanks for sharing this.

Yikes! I’m glad your injuries weren’t more serious.

BTW, I’ve found that for minor burns, immediately soaking the area in room temperature water provides amazing relief. Don’t be tempted to use cold water or ice water.

When I burn my hand in the kitchen or shop, an hour in a bowl of water usually cures the pain for good. I’m always surprised that it doesn’t begin to hurt later on.

Wow, glad nothing bad happened. Should I be worry about my imalent ms12 and R90c ?? Atleast I should pay very attention!

That could have turned very nasty, glad you are ok.

I agree, I have a couple smaller Imalent lights and they are great. Just the first generation DX80 has some issues, (this one was the first gen)
