Sofirn C01S SST-20 4.000K 95CRI / Low-High version available again!

With this knurling the thing is going to feel like a penny that got run over in the street 100 times. It needs some changes if it’s left unfinished, even as aluminum IMO

I got my first BLF version in yesterday. The low- high is a necessary change imo. I prefer the anodized version better so I put a new head on the anodized body. The tint and output levels are perfect. I have two more coming in at some point but this combination is a great backup light for me.

I was not aware that the knurling was so bad? When the C01 was developed I asked many times for a fairly agressive knurling, but they never did that. Nevertheless I find the knurling pretty ok, on the head it is good enough, on the body too shallow but overal I find it acceptable.

I’m not sure what constitutes “bad” when it comes to knurling. It’s grippy so in that respect it’s good and does its job but when it comes to the body tube, like you say, it’s so shallow it just feels like sand paper and I dont think brass or ti or copper will really be able to shine cause it’s not got any smooth parts on most of the light.

I see your point now. For me it is not something that bothers me much, I will love a brass version and will never polish it :slight_smile:

I sure hope they keep it low-high. There was a poll either here or on Candlepower about low-high versus high-low, and it was a landslide in favor of low-high.

I’ve never seen clear anodization IRL but I’d try it. I’d honestly prefer some good ’ol fashioned color anodization, preferably in hunter/forest green. That color is sadly neglected in a lot of releases. Pink or purple would be great for the ladies in my life.

Now that I’ve played around with the raw aluminum version in low-high, I’m impressed. Operation is wonderfully simple. The two modes are nicely spaced. The low is very usable and lasts a long time. The high is very bright and reaches out well for a light this size. The tint and color rendition are excellent. The only thing keeping it off my keychain is that I don’t like the feel of the raw aluminum. I’m really excited about seeing anodized versions in low-high.

Ok I felt bad for poopoo’ing on the knurling without offering better feedback. Here’s a few minutes on a belt grinder. The mid section is clean looking and smooth now and I left the head as is for better grip. IMO, this feels and looks much better to me.

Good idea! I like the grippiness of the head but I feel the body will abrade my pocket. I’m going to throw it on my grinder.

Hi All, Are these coming back? low-high C01s BLF clear anodized?

Anyone tried this with 10440 li-ion cells? Besides Noctiluco, that is.

Noctiluco said, in a related Sofirn C01S 4000K 100 lúmenes thread at ForoLinternas, the torch becomes a lot brighter and works fine with li-ion. But he only tested the thing with protected Turdfire cells, this is the reason I am asking for further feedback. Does the C01S implements low voltage warning or cut-off for 10440s?

I have one C01S that I used for crash-testing, works fine but looks crap now. I will try one of the new Vapcell 10440 cells in it (seems more high drain even than the Efest 10440) and see what happens :smiling_imp:

Be wary of the low voltage cut-off thing, set a li-ion charger at hand djozz.

I wonder how does the thing work with higher voltage cells. “DD” with sense resistor limiter like in cheap SK98s? Did someone dissected its driver yet?

I have no idea, but since I started this hobby, the many cheap AA and AAA flashlights that i had either burned with a li-ion, or work well but never work again in boost modus, or keep working fine with either cells. I do not think the typical boost driver for AA and AAA cells are specifically designed to function with Li-ion cells but it is simply a side-effect of the circuitry.

Gonna wait for that :smiling_imp:

While waiting for a second batch of these to jump in the boat a get a couple :slight_smile: And then get those Vapcell :wink:

Low (Eneloop):

CCT = 3628K (Duv 0.0043)
Color Rendering Index (Ra) = 95.1 [ R9 = 82.9 ]

High (Eneloop):

CCT = 3750K (Duv 0.0040)
Color Rendering Index (Ra) = 95.7 [ R9 = 88.0 ]

The results are in, C01S on Vapcell 10440:

3sec 53 lumen
10sec 29 lumen
20sec 34 lumen
30sec 38 lumen
40sec

So the 10440 gave surprisingly a lower output than an Eneloop. It appeared that both the tail spring had collapsed, breaking contact, and that the driver stopped working as boost driver: lengthening the spring made the 10440 work again but not the Eneloop. One component on the driver, on the left, showed a tell-taling bulge:

Note that there’s no easily identifyable boost coil.

RIP, thanks for taking one for the team.

Wellp, Noctiluco said it worked on li-ion. So something's different, for obvious reasons. Maybe djozz's C01S wasn't the :???: current version.

Curious.

Inductors (coils) come in chip-style packages that look very much like a SMD capacitor. I’m not so sure what those two components are towards the bottom: the reddish thing and the sparkly looking one. One of those might be the inductor. Granted, there are coil-less ways to boost voltage (eg, charge-pump) but I doubt that’s what we’re looking at.

Different surface-mount inductors:
