As far as I can tell, yes. Or perhaps styling preferences?

I’ve also seen a few people put grip tape or a piece of bicycle inner-tube on the middle section of the light to achieve better grip. My guess is that this is Neal’s answer to the complaint some have voiced about it being “slick” or “difficult to grip”.

For me personally, I find the light to be easy enough to grip without such additions.

Yes, for holding the light in a cigar grip. Makes it a bit more comfortable. I think they got the tactical name because they go well with a forward clicky switch and help with momentary pulses of bright light while holding a pistol. I think they just make a light more comfortable to hold in a cigar grip.

And if you want better grip but not that aggressive a tactical one, a nice thick o-ring does the job well. At first I wasn’t sure if the one I installed on mine would make much of a difference since I already put on a segment of rubber inner tube. But I’m finding overall it has improved grip and I never worry about a slip. No pun intended.
