Fireflies ROT66 Flashlight

Me either. I got a response promptly when I first contacted Jacky and he asked me to send a video, which I did. That was several months ago and he hasn’t answered any of my emails since then. Very disappointing.

Did the 6 clicks as suggested. That brought back the special modes, but now I have no ramping. Just a super low moonlight mode and a very bright (maybe even Turbo) mode. Reread TK's Anduril Manual , but I'm still stumped. Anyone have a suggestion to get ramping back?

Explain what it’s doing. You say you have no ramping, but somehow there are 2 very different brightness levels?

How are you changing the brightness levels, by a double click?

Maybe you are in stepped ramping mode and somehow changed the number of steps to 2.

Try turning the light on and do 3 fast clicks. This cycles between ramping and stepped ramping.

Turn the light on, then click 3 times. If I understand correctly, this should get smooth ramping back.

(I’m guessing you’re in stepped ramping mode with the number of steps set to only 2)

If you’d like to configure stepped ramping mode for better results, this may work:

  • Turn the light on.
  • Click 4 times to start ramp config mode. (The light should blink once, then flicker for a few seconds, then blink twice, then flicker, then blink three times, then flicker. Each flicker is a chance to enter a value.)
  • At the first option, click 1 time to set the floor to the lowest level.
  • At the second option, click 1 time to set the ceiling to the highest level.
  • At the third option, click 7 times to tell it you want 7 total steps.

Thanks again Jason and TK. I was just logging in to answer Jason. The behavior is like what TK suggested with 2 step ramp. I click to turn on. I get either Moonlight or Bright depending on what mode I last exited. I press and hold to change to the other mode. A single click turns the light off. Three clicks doesn't change anything. I tried several times varying my timing.

Maybe 3 clicks doesn't work when there are only 2 steps. I will add steps as TK suggests. Maybe that will allow 3 clicks to work. I'll report back. Thanks again you too for taking the time to help me out.

If you click 3 times to change the ramp style, it won’t immediately change the brightness. It should just give a very short “blip” at the end where it turns off for a split second. Then if you hold the button to try ramping, it should adjust the brightness in a smooth pattern.

That did the job. Thank you ToyKeeper.

Well, I finally got my replacement head, turns out it was shipped to the wrong address and it did not have enough postage so I had to pay another 5 bucks to pick it up. Unfortunately that’s where the “good” news ends. The head that arrived is all banged up, dented and scratched. I put it on my light and it doesn’t work. I have three fresh, fully charged cells in it that work fine in other lights but I’m getting a low battery indicator on the light, it flickers on and off and the interface is unresponsive…

So I give up, this light is a complete waste. I’m done with Fireflies, their service is terrible and their lights do not deliver on what they promise.

That sucks. It seems weird that two heads in a row would have been faulty.

The only suggestion I have, which maybe you already tried, is to put a thin shim of some kind between the battery carrier and the tailcap. Some people had problems with the battery carrier not being pressed into good contact with the head.

What batteries are you using? Are they the same set you had in when you fell into water?

That is 100% possible.

You may have had a bad carrier.

His post history indicates that the carrier was working fine before he submerged his last head into water, and they were nice enough to send a replacement.

I really hope his problem comes from protected cells, and not something else.

Yup either protected cells or maybe one is really damaged and has high internal resistance from shorting in the water.

This is what my second head does. First had two defective leds. This one is clearly shorting something out on the driver side.

I’m currently assembling the riders of the apocalypse to be released upon FF.

Sent a mail regarding the issue two months ago, no reply. PM’ed them on BLF a month ago. No reply…

One dead PL47 and two defective ROT66’s later, and I’m about to loose my sh.

EDIT: Finally got a reply, they are shipping a new head. So fingers crossed

I have a rot66, trying to remove the bezel but it doesnt budge. Anyone have the secret key to remove this thing? It is just taking a heat gun to the rim?

It’s possible it is just really tight, and maybe a strap wrench would help. However, it is probably glued. Try heat, but whether that works depends on what glue they used.

Got mine (that was glued) off, by using brute force. Make sure you protect the bezel when forcing it off.
Mine have some scratches from the procedure

Sorry, missed these messages, I got pretty fed up with the flashlight and have pretty much written it off.

No, I don’t believe it’s a bad carrier, nor bad cells, I don’t generally use protected cells and I’ve tried multiple different ones. The original head that got wet is sort of working, it has a couple dead LEDs but otherwise it works as normal since it dried. The new head still has the same issues. I’ve tried getting them apart to see if I can fix anything but they are glued quite tightly.

It’s now just sitting in a drawer with some crappy laptop cells acting as an emergency backup light.

Also, just to clear things up, while I definitely do admit to getting the light wet, the light is advertised as being IPX8 rated which means it should survive being continuously submerged in 1 meter of water. I fell into the shallow end of a pool (3 feet) with the light and it immediately filled with water. I would consider that a warranty problem since it clearly did not live up to it’s claimed ratings and not fireflies just being nice about replacing it. It was like pulling teeth to get a replacement.

While chatting with Fireflies, Jack was very kind to offer some face masks to include with my package. I asked if he can find some Level 3 or N95 face masks and offer them on his website, which would help so many people where facemasks and respirators, especially real Level 3 and N95 rated ones, are near impossible to find or extremely expensive due to supply and demand. The price is only going to go up at a very rapid rate given the world wide shortage.

He agreed to help and said he would like to do this to lend a hand to the world wide situation and not profit off of it. But I said given the time and effort he put into this and a family to feed it is justifiable to at least price this to cover the labor and overhead.

He searched around and talked to various sources and ended up ordering some samples from different manufacturers. He’s also asking for advice on ways to test them to make sure they are legit. Not sure if he will be able to test them as it seems hard to do without professional equipment. But he is talking to a contact that organized a large group donation to Wuhan that can point him to the right direction.

He told me he just sourced the very last 205 pieces of FFP2 N95 respirators from Russia and he is considering stocking some in the Calfornia warehouse for fast delivery to us.

He should soon offer them in the Fireflies store or you can also contact him directly for details. I would much rather buy these from FF than from random sellers on Amazon, Ebay, and Aliexpress where they can label the masks with any rating (e.g., $10 100,000 lumen flashlights).
