Question about a build that won't change modes

Hello,

Just finished a S2+ build with a 1A XP-L on copper heatsink driven by a banggood A17-DD driver. The light will switch on and off fine but will not change modes with the normal long or short clicks. The only way i can get modes to change is by shorting tailcap with a screwdriver, and moving it around super quick.

I am thinking an issue with the off time resistor but I haven’t messed with the A6 driver’s hardware or circuit so just seeing if anyone else has seen this before i start tearing it back apart.

I have about 20 of these drivers in a drawer, the old yellow ones. I hope they aren’t all like this.

Makes no sense if you short with screwdriver you do the same as with the switch

lighted tail caps can mess with mode change, but usually then next mode memory

Does the light blink with half-clicks? As Lexel says if it works when you short it with a screwdriver then the driver itself seems to be ok.

It doesnt work normally even when shorting with screwdriver. You have to kind of slide it around to break contact for maybe a few millisec to get it to change. It’s very hard to control what mode you want because of how I am having to do it.

I cannot get it to change at all with the switch in place. I am familiar with the A6 firmware, and it won’t go into mode group selection either.

It feels like it is only switching modes if you do it really fast, such as an off timer is halved or more. Will take video tomorrow before i switch to another driver.

I also moved the tailcap to another light which worked fine. The only thing different from my other builds is the copper heatsink. It is not a lighted tailcap, and the switch is good.

Swapped the driver out today. The problem is not there now so I suppose something in the driver. Will have to get some schematics and also remove the chip to check firmware. Maybe the random plastic bag that was not ESD safe from banggood did not help.
