Convoy C8+ getting hot

Depends on the temperature outside, your grip, buncha other factors.

As I learned from actual intentional hand-warmers, they can get comfy hot when left untouched, but then once you grab hold and sink away that nice heat, they seem to cool down rather quickly. Same with lights. Your hand (and blood-vessels, etc.) wick away heat which is quite unlike just leaving it tailstanding.

In scorching summer, not as much as a subzero winter.

Etc.

That’s why timed stepdowns are generally Frowned Upon here, vs active temperature control which steps down only only only when needed.

Well, what version of the C8+ do you have?

Is it the SST-40 or XP-L HI?

@racoon city: I don’t have the FW3A, so I can’t tell, but I think it’s not as bright as the C8+ on max, which is why I didn’t choose it in the first place.

@Lightbringer: That makes sense. I was holding it, but I couldn’t do it for too long, as it got hotter and hotter.

@BlueSwordM: I have the XPl-HI. Is the SST-40 better?

@QMT93, no. It’s actually worse in terms of heat since it consumes more power.

Lucky me, I guess!

It has nearly 3x the output with the same X-PL HI emitters. Lumens is total light output and candela is how intense/focused a light is. The C8 has much higher candela due to being a single emitter in a large reflector vs three emitters behind tiny optics in the FW3A.

I just prefer higher cd/lux count, since it’s meant to be a pocket thrower. Its spill is decent, in my opinion, so I’d say it’s a high output throw.

weird, i have 2 c8+ and they dont get that hot… i mean the xpl hi does what 900 lumens only or so ? the s2+ tho gets hot since smaller size so worse heat transfers… but the c8 can handle highest mode long…

the sst20 version i can imagine gets hot quick since it does 2000 lumens or near that… but i dont have that one.

the l6 is amazing if u want a light that size to shine 3000+lumens for a longer time, in the summer when it was 30c here my light heated up quickly but still u can run if a for a few min or longer depending how hot or cold it is where u live.

Were you holding it or leaving it unattended when it reached unbearable temperature?

mortuus: I'm not sure what's wrong with my lights, if any. varbos: I left it unattended at first, then wait for it to cool, then held it in my hand. In both cases, the light got hot at around the same time.

Strange. The Convoy C8+ shouldn’t get too hot, at least not for many minutes. And if you’re holding it, it should maintain a temperature that is very holdable. I have a couple of Convoy C8’s and they don’t get hot at all, but they’re about 25% less bright than the C8. My Astrolux C8 is brighter than the Convoy C8, and even it doesn’t get that hot for several minutes (I have to keep boosting back to turbo every time it’s stupid timed stepdown happens).

If you turn on your light (to max) and set it down for awhile indoors (where there’s no wind), then I could see it would get hot eventually. I think the solution is to pick it up and use it normally.

When I am holding it in my hand (which acts as heatsink) my C8 Clear (7135x8 XPL-HI) will get pretty hot at the head/fins in 10-15 min. (at 100%)
But the body tube will not get “unbearably hot”. Just warm, no problem.

I would not expect C8+ with same emitter and driver to be significantly different. It sounds a little bit strange to me but there are many factors at play.

WalkIntoTheLight: I hold it in my hand, but it gets hot after a few minutes. varbos: I don’t know what to say. I guess I have a bad one.

Could be one of those thin C8 clones…usually the C8 has a solid shelf the emitter and star sit on…

Or it could be a short, can it turn off with the tail clicky?

I bought it from Fasttech. Is it a reputable reseller?

Turn off with the tail clicky? Can you elaborate? It’s a reverse clicky, so I have to press all the way to turn on or off.

If there is a short…when you screw it in…it comes on…clicky has no effect

Should be a good one…fasttech should ship good lights…

They should get warm but not so hot you can’t touch it

It doesn’t short, because I have to click it to turn it on or off.

I’ll do the test again.

This thread had my interest, so am curious to know how it went ….what did you find was causing the excessive heat?

Above. .^

Bloody Victorians.

I married one. Chuckle

STD Convoy XPL Fresh charged 30Q cell. on 4.
Tail standing on desk. ( I normally run it on 3 not 4.)

10 minutes, WARM Handle.
Getting hot just about manageable head.

15 min’s. Hot but manageable handle.
Head. Too hot to hold with my little Pinkies.
Would need a glove.
25deg Ambient temp Inside, here.

This is one of his early, original ones.
My Sofurn C8T does run cooler.

I can’t tell why, but the body really doesn’t feel as hot anymore.
