Nightwatch NI40- De-domed sst40cw/nw and xhp50.2 - new budget throwers @ nealsgadgets

Are you sure? I have a LD-A4 driver in a Convoy C8+. The LD-A4 has onboard temp threshold that turns off the driver at 65 degrees Celcius. At that point, the host is impossible to hold except at the tail. I then went and wired in the temp sensor on the MCPCB to the driver and set it to trip at 55 degrees Celcius surface temp of the head, measured on the fins with an infrared thermometer more or less in line with the shelf. The LD-A4 driver is at that point still far from exceeding it’s own onboard threshhold of 65 degrees celcius.

Maybe 55 to 60 degrees celcius driver temp would be fine, but in my opinion 65 to 70 degrees Celcius driver temp is pushing it…

Jack used to sell the dual switch version of the Nightwatch IRA with the copper pill on his Enogear site and that was a beast of a host. I put in a 4x E21A in that host and it can pretty much sustain turbo indefinitely in outdoor use while holding it in the hands.

One might have to buy both the SST40 NW dedomed and the sliced and diced XHP50.2 versions just because of the leds. :smiling_imp: Signed up for SST40 NW in M4D M4X interest list.

Neal, do you think it may be possible to get a dedomed XHP50.2 seperately, without the flashlight?

The driver is different depending on which emitter you choose. There are 8 7135 chips on the spring side of the 50.2 (yes, a 3V XHP-50.2) but there is nothing on the spring side of the SST-40 driver and it is green, completely different driver. The UI is High to Low on the 50.2 I got, and Low to High on the SST-40.

I tested with a rested Basen at 4.12V and saw 3.26A to the SST-40, while the same cell showed 9A (after climbing for a bit) to the 50.2.

I don’t have lumens numbers or lux numbers at this time, was working outside all day in the heat and am beat, but I did get the old Arctic Cat running! :smiley:

I just took a tint measurement on my SST-40 version of the NI40 and got these results:
CCT: 4780K
DUV: 0.0250
Ra (CRI): 66.6.

With a DUV of 0.0250, this is by far the greenest tint I’ve ever seen in a flashlight. It’s unfortunate because I really like everything else about the light. It is very solid and well built (typical Nightwatch) and the functional cooling fins are done perfectly. The dedomed SST-40 throws really well but the tint is unfortunate. This does make for a really good host for modding. Maybe if you put a 1mm or 2mm White Flat in there, the thermal performance of this host might be able to handle max output until the batteries run out.

Chemical de-domes tend to push an emitter into the green, and they definitely chemically de-domed the SST-40, with what is the mystery as I have known several people trying all sorts of combinations to get the 40 to come clean! They’ve done it here, and it has a nice tight beam… outdoors where green is prevalent it really isn’t noticeable and of course if throw is really what one is looking for the slight off-tint half a mile away is usually much less a factor than the subject illuminated… :wink:

Sharp fins are my pet peeve. I have baby soft hands.

Surprised even with the dedome the tint made it down to 4780K. They must have de-domed one of the neutral bins. The cool whites I have sliced previously were still very high CCT before and after slicing.

That NI40 SST-40 looks like a seriously good value deal. Though the price went up already.

Contactcr, the SST-40 is chemically de-domed, not sliced. The “de-domed” offering of the 3V XHP-50.2 is sliced and diced and not all that well. Just saying.

Got a sample from Neal as well. This is an odd one since packaging says S2WP and that’s what Neal also told me it has. But that one only matches to an Osram RGBW LED from what I could find.

Spacing of the four modes is bad: low too high and the three highest modes are too close to each other.

No visible PWM.

Very nice cool white tint and negligible tint shift across the beam. Build is super solid.

Don’t mind the lux. It was just a quick test at an arbitrary distance on the second highest mode.
