Luminus SST-10R Red - anyone?

Anyone tried one?

I just ordered a few for experimentation.

The 90 degree viewing angle doesn’t inspire really, but we’ll see.

I notice they have a P60 dropin for sale with this emitter.

What do you use a high powered red light for? Unless you are building a blinkie to use as a safety light for walking/jogging/biking.

Sadly kaidomain doesn’t offer any true 660nm Photo Red leds.

Will be used for hunting.

This math kinda does not add up!
Is it better than Cree XPE2?

What doesn’t add up?
Reverse voltage is the voltage at which damage will occur when a potential is applied backwards across the diode (positive into cathode).
Going off the iF and power ratings it should run at 3v at 1.5A.

For those interested I got three of these from Kaidomain to mod some torches with.

I’ve used a 2.1A driver from Fasttech, I had some lying around.

For starters, it’s like the solder pads on these were silicon coated - I had no end of trouble getting solder to stick to them! Worst I’ve ever encountered.

Anyhow, I installed one in a Brynyte S28 which has a deep, smooth reflector around 57mm. And the emitter works very well in it - very bright, tight hot spot and faint spill.

I also installed one in a Brynyte B158 (aspheric, around 50mm). I did not expect the wider viewing angle to work so great and to some extent I was right.

The spot is larger than an XP-E2 in the same torch but probably at least as bright.

Not a failure by any means and I’m interested in comparing them at night - I expect similar range from the two B158’s but a larger spot from the Luminus equipped one.

Definitely a good choice for a large reflector based light for those wanting a red thrower.

Also the topic of red, I got a red triple P60 dropin from Kaidomain while I was at it and it’s damn cool!

90 degree viewing angle is not wide. It’s actually quite narrow compared to what we normally use in lights. Curious what emission angle you’d expect to use in the Brinyte B158 by comparison? CREE 660nm Photo Red XPE has an emission angle of 130 degrees.

Whatever the case, it’s producing a larger spot than the XP-E2 and they’re the same dimension and both are focused well enough that you can see the bond wires.

I’ve tried this LED in replacement of my XP-E2 red with 60deg Carclo round optics. The reading my luxmeted was giving idicated about 15% loss vs XP-E2 so I’ve put there back the Cree LED.

I’m liking this LED having tried it at night and mounted on top of a rifle.

For whatever reason the spot out of the B58 is about 20% larger than the one with the XPE2 and it looks a bit brighter to go with it. (tho it is run harder) and I really like it out of the S28.
