[4K Review] CONVOY S2+ SST40

Can’t go wrong for the price. Review friendly UI lol.

I appreciate the lumen measurements and the throw measurements. Not a fan of the mode spacing to be honest after seeing your numbers but at least it has a moonlight mode. Too bad they didn’t send you the 5000K version as that’s definitely something that I personally would have desired to see and know if there was and tint shifts to green or something along the sort. Thanks for the review.

Yea I don’t especially appreciate the basic convoy 4 mode UI. While it is simple, second highest mode is only 30, a big gap from the highest mode. And typically these small lights heat up quickly so would be nice to have another mode in there at least 50. Of course I guess some of you all could easily replace the driver for a better UI. Just got an S12 with the same UI.

The issue is actually that 30% and 100% modes are actually far too close in visual brightness on most of the lights using the new driver. Should be 10 or 15 instead of 30, or even better keep 30 in the rotation too.

Yeah, that always bugged me that so many lights would have lower modes with huuuuuuuuuge gaps between, but then you’d have 50% and 100% right next to each other, with little if any visual difference.

I was happy with the spacing, 2 levels for indoor, 2 for outdoors with presumably the 30% being the highest the light can run without burning fingers.

A 5th at 200 lumens would be great for long runtime walks but then you start losing the ease of use factor.

The SST40 5000k on the Convoy S2+ looks sort of “pink”:
(left = Convoy S2+ SST40 6500k ; right = Convoy S2+ SST40 5000k)

I know I’m resurrecting an older thread, but “thank you” for the review. I enjoy watching your youtube reviews. I got one on the way, the sale price is pretty good right now off of Banggood for CNY. Maybe this will be my first one I mod, and put a biscotti driver in it.

Hi, maybe somebody has current draw measurements of this light?

Low is too bright to be 1 lumen.

Had anyone did a runtime on this version of S2+?

Thanks for the excellent review, like others I’d prefer HIGH to be more than 30%. Still a very nice flashlight. I have multiple Convoys and it’s great to see a 1800 Lumen version out.

I like the new Colors on the S2+, got one question for the people who modify the lights. Is it difficult to change the tail button to a rubber covered one? Not a big fan of the metal buttons.

Very.

I think there are separate models with separate button types. The grey S2+ has a rubber button, and you can’t switch it out with the metal button sold in the Convoy store. Likely that means you can’t put a rubber button in the metal button ones either.

Yeh, that’s what I said. Tough to do unless you got your own lathe, etc.

Need to drill out the threaded hole the metal switch goes into so that the rubber boot will fit into the hole, swap the switch guts underneath, and I think even the retaining system (ring+threads) might be a bit different, too.

I wanted to backlight a metal switch (barely-translucent ring around the periphery), got the lit boards for the rubber-boot switch, and after comparing, just said “nah” and gave up. Not sour-grapes, but wasn’t that imperative.

Colored lights (now lights-of-color) have the metal buttons and nice presentation-box. Gray/black/other-gray/even-other-gray, etc., have the rubber boots and cheapie CWB (Crappy White Box).

Thanks for the review. I think the 30% mode is a balance of brightness and temperature. Any higher, like 50%, would likely develop more heat without much brightness gain. But I appreciate this design. Simple 4-modes. Nothing gets snagged or digs in my palms. No cooling fins with annoying edges. Even the switch is out the way. It’s a pleasant light to take during my night time walks.

Hello,
please is the 5A driver regulated?
I’m trying to decide between Wurkos FC11 (which I know is not regulated) and S2+ with 5A driver (which I do not know).

It will be regulated as long as the battery remains high enough for the mode, the Convoy will have better lm/W efficiency due to no PWM. The Convoy is available in LH351D too like the FC11. On the other hand FC11 UI is IMHO better.

Necropost: Thank you for the review! The flood seems _really _smooth and yet it has a lot of range for a pocket EDC, and the price is great! I just ordered this and the 265nm version (with filters and metal clips) off AliExpress.
