change sst40 to sst20 in S2+ and add TIR optics?

I ordered some S2+ with SST40 and would like to change one to SSt20. Aside from this LED, (16mm right?) what “gasket” do I need?

7mm hole? 9mm hole? round or butterfly shape?

Also, do these TIR lenses just drop into S2+ for sst20, sst40, 219c, and xml2?

I’m not sure the smaller SST20 will be happy at 5A.

5A is pushing it. I don’t push my SST-20 LED’s past 4.5A for turbo runs. At 4A you will be safe.

The SST-20 is in the 3535 (3.5 x 3.5 mm class).

Get the TIR optics from Yajiamei. They fit the 3535 LED’s perfectly and give a good beam. I suggest you get the 10, 15 & 20 degree optics.

No need for a gasket.

Interesting. Are those optics different than the way more expensive ones I linked to?

I haven’t tried the optics from Convoy, but I know Yajiamei Optics are great and the go-to single LED optic on BLF. I have many of them in modded lights.

This is where I got the idea. I ordered them asking him to change to sst20 but he didn’t.
Reddit thread SST40 S2+

Why do you want the SST-20 from Convoy?

Also, I assumed the thermal protection they mentioned would help?

The thermal protection does help a bit, but when the light is below the temperature threshold the LED will get full current on high mode, if the battery voltage/type of battery can supply enough power.

FWIW I’ve been using a 5000K sst20 in an S2+ with the newer sst40 driver and have had no issues.

I’m using it as my bicycle light. It stays on high for extended runtimes.

5A is about perfect.

What is pushing it is 6A though.

5A is about perfect for some nice brightness and superb throw from a light this size.

So this 21mm won’t fit? http://www.leddna.com/30-degree-frosted-21mm-reflector-collimator-led-lens-for-cree-xhp50-xml2-xm-l/

And will a Luxeon V fit under a 3535 size TIR?

I don’t have an S2+ anymore, so I’m not sure if that optic will fit. I know the Yajiamei Optics fit without any modifications. And I can confirm a Luxeon V does not fit under a 3535 optic, it’s 4040. You can use a reaming tool to open the optic a bit but then you need to raise the optic a bit with a shim to make up for the lost height when reaming it, otherwise it’s out of focus. I just reverted back to a reflector for my Luxeon V.

The best results I had WITH 20mm Yajiamei beaded optics were SST-20, XP-L HI, XP-L HD, LH351D (in that order throw to flood). And I have only tested 10, 15, 20 degree 20mm Yajiamei beaded optics.
