TK's Emisar D4 review

yes but id like the copper heatsink also. just the internals. can anyone show us how to disassemble the d4?

Has anyone used these in a d4v2?

Noticed these are the newest 18350 cells out I believe, I purchased two for 6.fidy

I’m running Vapcell 18350, 1100mAhr, works great in the V1 light. Looks like the same form factor as your cell in the picture above.

I may order two of those vapcells being 1100 mah thanks

My D4 V1 appears to be possessed. I carry it lens up in a holster, and the other day, I smelled something burning.

I took off my jacket, just in time to see my shirt starting to burn. There is a perfectly circular hole in it. I thought perhaps I forgot to 6 click it.

Today however, while changing, I noticed a white light coming from my pants, which I had laid on the bed, the light was on, and hot enough to be painful trying to remove it from the holster, to shut it off.

It wouldn’t shut off. I had to back off the tail cap. I set it on my desk, and when cool, screwed the tailcap back on.

It will randomly turn itself on, sometimes a full power flash, sometimes dim, it has even ramped up and down. I tried to check/reset the thermal management, but 10 clicks, it just stays off.

This is new behavior for it, I use Sony VTC6 batts in it for the year and a half I’ve had it, never a problem. If anybody has a fix, I’d appreciate it. It’s not practical to have to twist the tailcap on to use the light, but its no longer safe to carry. I’ve cleaned & inspected it regularly, Maybe those many drops have added up. Ideas?

I’m not a modder but I can certainly say without hesitation that I mechanically lock mine out whenever I carry in my pocket (after burning a hole in a pair of jeans)

It’s pretty rare, but it seems that sometimes the D4 can end up with the switch wires shorted, which makes it think the button is being held when it’s not. I encountered this issue once on one of mine, and I fixed it be replacing a switch wire and being extra careful when putting the driver back in. Before that though, it would sometimes detect button presses when there were none.

Just to be sure, you have an original model with RampingIOS, right? (so 6 clicks for lockout, 8 clicks for beacon mode)

In more recent firmware, there is code to detect a stuck button and respond in a manner which is more safe. The original didn’t have that, though.

Would you be willing to run some tests, to help diagnose the issue?

Curious if anyone has had a serious hot pants romance with an over eager
D4.

I need to know since I am looking for a couple of D4 (w/219C) to use as winter hand warmers
When riding my mountain bike.

Do you suppose Mountain would have some NOS in a dark shelf somewhere? :sunglasses:

Anyone want to get rid of their hot rod? For a bargain basement $ALE price?

D4 BLF discount code - Google Search for relevant answers

Hank (Wang, not the user above  ) bakes the discount right into his base prices. He doesn’t make people search for codes, sign up for special GBs, or rip off customers that don’t know about/haven’t found the right forum where a discount is posted.

Yup.

Last year, I lost a couple pants pockets to the original Emisar D4. Turned on in my pocket and burned a hole the size of the front of the light through the pocket. I didn’t feel any heat on my leg and the outer cloth on my pants wasn’t damaged… but the pocket was toast.

Fortunately, today’s Emisar D4v2 has 3 features to make it pocket-safe that were all missing in the original D4:

  • Max ramp can be manually set to a safe-for-pocket level. The original D4 used RampingIOS firmware. If the button accidentally depressed in your pocket and was held down the light would ramp up to turbo and stay there. In the D4v2 with Anduril, the same action only ramps the light to the top of the ramp which is below turbo (and can be manually set). The only way to get to turbo is to double-click when the light is on… an operation that is unlikely to happen by accident in the pocket. In my Anduril lights I like to set the max-ramp to just below where damage would occur to my pocket.
  • The latest versions of Anduril come with pocket-protection. If the button is pressed and held, the light will ramp up to max ramp, then pause, then ramp down to moonlight, turn off, and activate electronic lockout. My D4v2 Ti came with this updated Anduril version installed.
  • It is now possible to buy the D4v2 with an optional raised switchboot retaining ring. The raised ring keeps pocket cargo from hitting the button and greatly reduces the chances of accidental pocket activation.

Personally, I consider my Anduril lights to be completely pocket-safe. I haven’t had any problems and don’t feel the raised ring is even necessary.

Thanks for your informative post.

I generally twist power off on my D4S, just to be over cautious.

I think a pocket friendly 18650 (with power twist off) OG D4, or two, would serve
As handlebar lights / hand warmers.

A dual purpose D4 for winter bike rides?

Since you already have tested it, which max level would you say is pocket safe?

I forget what mine is set at right now. I think I’ve set the max ramp at 30 or 35 steps below max turbo brightness.

I’ve looked through the thread but didn’t see anything and I’m sure it’s been asked already but will the stainless bezel from the D4V2 fit the original D4?

I’m not sure, but I think the D4v2 bezel threads may be slightly different than the D4v1 bezel threads. I’ve had difficulty swapping that particular part between the two. I was able to put a v1 battery tube on a v2 head though.

Cool thanks, just got a D4 on trade and might try it out. Looking to get the deep clip, 10621 optic and the bezel. It’s only a few bucks and if it doesn’t work I can pass it on.

Yes … I have the SS bezel from a D4V2 on a grey original D4 right now. It fits perfectly.

Great! I’ll order them tonight.

P.S.

TK, it’s green too lol.
