anyone else stuffing ebay q8 parts into maglights?

i cant be the only one who measured things and started doing this.
the variations between certain versions of mags mean you have to play a bit to get heatsinking from mcpcb to head/body but these have turned out nicely.

Got a link?

Or pictures!

Thanks for the idea!

I have a 2D Mag I started to mod, well replaced the spring so two 26650 will fit. I also have a Q8 MPCB and reflector I bought for another host, but didn’t use. All I need is spacers for the 26650 and a good buck driver.

q8 parts
neutral n219

Thanks.

glad i ordered extras.
i see a sellout coming in 5 4 3 2 1.

added link for my 219c leds.
you need 4 3535 footprint leds and have to reflow solder them.cree xp,xp-l
nichia 219.
samsung lh351.
luminus sst20.
and others i forgot.
its not that hard even with crude equipment like a 2 stage hf $10 heat gun on low.

What kind of tinkering is required to make everything fit?

I have posted this before. Only single emitter but has ebay driver. i started with a nonworking C cell maglite from ebay. It was the first light i modified.

older one dropped right in and had contact with ledge in head and end of tube.
i used small laptop screws to attach mcpcb to reflector .
i ran it dd on a sleeve and 26650.
theres enough resistance in the light to limit to around 6a.
x 4p leds thats no problem.
a newer one i cut out a copper plate to take up 5mm gap between the mcpcb and the shelf and tube end.
i did resistance mods to that one and its hitting 9a.
it also has better heat transfer to the head.
the bezel does not screw down fully but not by much.
i have tested the dtp mcpcb to 12a with no blue shifting indicating it couldnt shed heat from the die.
i didnt expect any issue anyway.i might “in the name of science” test it to find the point where it spits the rods through the block.
all in all its a nice mod for cheap.

Do you have pictures of the q8 parts installed? I think I get the general idea, but would like to see how it goes together.

I only had an inkling that dimensions between them were similar, but didn’t know how much I’d have to build up or shave off. Sofirn has their Q8 parts for the taking, and was gonna order those just to see, but never pulled the trigger on it.

the driver is too big for a mag.
i got extra mcpcb and a few drivers to build a lantern.

well now you know.
probably other common lights these can be put in too.

Someone should put together retro kits for mags that don’t break the bank. Everyone has some lying around. I’ve got like 5.

buy the reflector and mcpcb.
some shims may need to be fabricated.
gut the bulb and run the wired through the bulb retainer and solder to the emptied out bulb base.
i have done a 2d which now runs from a 26650 and a 3d running from d nimh.
both are dd.
there is no shortage of drop ins for mags where high performance ones are costly.
this is a cheap diy if you can handle simple stuff.

Well, i use old school stuff in Mag... like derWichtel 9A buck, adjustable driver for SST-90.

All others are modded for 50W-200W incan bulbs (1500lm-14000lm).

The stock switch is used? One 26650?

yes.
there is enough resistance in the spring, tower, ect to allow dd.resistance mods needed to push it harder.
26650 in an adaptor.
a 32650 could work with a simple adapter.
not many choices out there and not much advantage.
i have seen 8000 mah 32650 but not confirmed that the rating is true.
