Yep. There are many examples of that sort of disaster happening. The citrus industry in Florida is threatened with a wipeout because of some disease that they figure was brought here by someone illegally importing some orange tree cuttings. In the past, we also made the problem ourselves by importing a species of something that was supposed to be the cure for some other problem.
Maybe because 3450 mAh is not a round number? I have a bunch of these cells and even after repeated abuse 99 % of them still measure 3450 mAh ± 30 mAh. I would have called them 3400 mAh just because but hey. All manufactures mAh ratings are lies if you ask me because the testing is done at such low amperage and measured down to 2.5 volts. The NCR18650GA is my go to when non protected 10 amp and or high capacity cells are needed.
I’m partial to them too. They’re going to be my Go-To for “low” power lights like the A6, SC31, etc.
I like how the factory believes in “under-promise and over-deliver.” If you look at their spec sheets, they’re only rated as 3300, yet are expected to have a minimum capacity of 3350 and a typical rating of 3450. I can respect their modest promises. Like you, I am even OK with them being advertised as 3400. After that, it’s just a slippery slope that leads to calling them GIF 9900 or UltroFire 5800.
I find it very interesting that not one person has posted about another delay for those on the list in acquiring this lantern? This time something about them not being able to get the LEDs… It was stated that this would be another month, or more! I’m sure that takes us into Chinese New Years…. so we’re most likely looking at many more months. Yea, It bothers me, because the lantern has excellent reviews and who isn’t anxious to get theirs, it’s been a while
I don’t know why there isn’t some Manufacturer rep who can be transparent with us, except that isn’t normal behavior for a human being. You simply can’t fault honesty.
Meanwhile I’ll just continue to look at the posts of those who have already received their lanterns.
(wouldn’t change anything, but would like to know how it happened that THEY cannot get LEDs now)
“it” happens when you’re a dealing with small-ish wholesale quantities of products that are run in batches
Personally, I’m happy that they bothered letting us know of the delay, and even shared why things are being delayed. It was easy to be patient when there was no real ETA on this. Now that things have started and the finish line is in sight, it’s getting harder.
From what information we been told & can gather now, the 2nd batch release will be closer to the end of the month. It appears that because of the massive order for the LH351D LEDs they need to manufacture them to shore-up the number needed. (of its 2500 GB LT1’s, that equals to 10,000 2700K and 10,000 5000K LED units they need, i’m guessing there wasn’t that many produced yet.
Another vote for changing the bail handle and adding powerbank support.
Assuming you carry the lantern conventionally and not suspended from paracord, the wirey bail handle will dig into your hand over time. The streamlight siege have nice bail handles coated in some rubber/silicone so not as uncomfortable.
And seems a waste to lug around 4x18650 and not be able to dip into those power reserves if light is needed in a particular situation. Nitecore and Fenix both of have lanterns with powerbank features so shouldn’t too much of a stretch.
Mine came in yesterday… I have not been able to find any faults with the light, solder pads for 7135’s were correct, everything was tight and clean and it lit up!
Seriously, this is a wonderful product from a strong design team and Sofirn’s manufacturing was spot on!
Only one minor nit to pick… and I think and easy fix. I like light from 3000k to about 4750k. When the brightness is ramped up, the tint shifts to cooler as expected since CW leds have more light output. I am thinking about opening up one of the 7135 channels on the CW side of the driver to remove some of that tendency. Not sure if it will be to much or not, but going to try. Still can’t get over how smooth the light from this unit really is. I can see I will use it often, if my daughter does not steal it to read by late at night.
