@Jason: Thanks for the picts - i think i saw them somewhere some while ago… Damn, it does not look easy. I would have to get the rubber tools and a bigger vise… Not sure i’ll get into this mod.

How about heating the bezel wish a hair drier? It should dilate a little more then the head and become easier to unscrew? That may damage the lens though?

A lot of the resistance is due to the rubber oring.

The lens is glass so heat will not effect it.

I don’t know if heating the bezel will help or not.

I clamped the flattened part with the button on it in a work-mate. Unscrewed the whole top including reflector with a simple rubber strap shown in JasonWW’s pictures. I didn’t really need the tool I think. Mine came loose easily, so I guess there is a lot of variation.

What a relief it is to have my GT70 back up and running.

I got my replacement LED’s in the mail yesterday and I’ve been hyping myself up for my first reflow attempt on an LED. I had a few practice runs- I used a hot air gun on the bottom of the MCPCB- holding it in place with some alligator clip helping hands. Holding the heat gun about 6-8 inches away seemed to heat it nice and steadily. The solder paste really worked like magic on it too. I was able to remove and replacing the dead LED on the other MCPCB with minimal fuss, using a big pair of metal tweezers. Once my hands had steadied out and I had some confidence I fired up the hot air gun again and had a go at the GT70 MCPCB.

It went surprisingly easily, the LED floats straight on to the pads and with a little pat down on top the excess solder pops out the sides. Beautiful.

I screwed the whole lot back together (with a liberal application of thermal paste under the MCPCB) and fired it up, and finally its back to it’s old self blasting away the darkness.

Thanks again to everyone here with the advice and tips, guiding me on how to get this job done properly. You guys really are top notch. Here’s to hoping all my future work on this light is making it more epic with mods not just fixing it.

Yeah, the GT70 turned out pretty good. Have a look at the GT4 for an even more impressive version that is sadly not released yet.

How risky is dedoming? Would you recommend it? How likely is a sbt.90 conversion kit? Should I wait?

It has risks, particularly if you have not done it before. I tell people to be prepared to replace the LED before de-doming.

De-doming gives a good gain in throw but the tint suffers for sure. Personally I don’t do it to my personal lights.

Does it have the same effect on the neutral white tint led? Sbt.90?? Lol

Yes, the effects are basically the same on all of them. The CW is the least noticeable as a rule.

does lumintop have any plans sell this with the sst40 emitter ?

First you need to ask if there is any advantage to the SST-40 over the xph-35hi?

I think lumens is about the same, but SST-40 has a tiny bit smaller die. 1.99x2 to 2.35x2. I doubt the small increase in throw would be worth the effort to design a new 3v driver for it. Botton line, I dont think it would sell well. Maybe Lumintop can test the waters to see if people are interested.

ah okay… was thinking since the ft03 is such a great thrower with that emitter maybe blf gt would be also but if not much difference between i guess not hehe…

I highly doubt it, the SBT-90.2 is the next step for this series of lights.

totally understand… another question, does lumintop still make the xhp35 or xhp70 version or is it sold out?

Last I knew they were still being sold, don’t see any reason they would stop selling them unless they ran out of stock.

BLF GT70 Issue.
Light will only ramp up to maybe 20%. I get a double blink when its at its low output max.
Double click of the button for turbo mode yeileds the same result in output.
Cells all measure 4.17-4.18v Samsung 35E button tops
Factory reset also yeilds the same results.
Any ideas?
