Looking at the graphs got me thinking. Can someone explain to me why the Olight M2R Pro weighting 95.8g with a single XHP35 emitter can sustain 750 lumens, but the MF01 Mini weighing 171g, more surface area, and 7 SST-20 emitters only sustain 1,000 lumens? In turbo mode, the MF01 Mini seems to only sustain about 500 lumens.
I understand the SST-20 is not as efficient as the XHP35 but with 7 emitters, the SST-20 emitters should be operating at an efficiency range likely comparable to the XHP35 or more likely even more efficient.
Better driver and thermal design/efficiency with more expensive flashlights, e.g. ZL SC700d and Wuben TO50R are both smaller and lighter than MF01 mini yet can sustain 1,000+ lm for an extended period?
The sustained lumens are proportional to the lights temperature and surface area
So if you get the temperature limit a lot higher it maintain more lumens
Of course especially with full battery good buck/boost drivers are more efficient, with reasonable discharged battery the sustained lumens of the MF01 mini increase
I know it general, but as I do my research on full copper mf01 mini vs stock alu mf01 mini stepdown result is pretty much the same. I’m not only count on turbo stepdown. I’m also look strpdown on top ramping, mid ramping…
So Jason, I guess you recomendd me the full copper right? What about the alu + copper version? I mean there less heavy and less expensive than full copper…I’m trying to figure out which one gonna buy?
Definitely not, full copper is very heavy and a pain to carry. It does have the best performance which is what you asked for. I would stick to all aluminum for a light you are actually gonna use. I think the other 3 versions are more for looking pretty and collecting.
I personally don’t use Turbo more than 5 or 10 seconds at a time anyway so there is zero advantage for me to get the copper version.
my plan is that, I’m gonna buy the ALU + COPPER MF01 mini and replace the plastic cover with the above mention special copper pill design, paste with thermal cpu compound and done! Hope to expect much longer stepdown for 1000lumen and 1800lumen. Turbo? nah…me too rarely rely to it, too much of heat…
Thanks Jason for the explanation, I fully agree with you.
The full copper will bring some small advantages in turbo mode, but whether it’s worth it, everyone has to assess themselves.
My Ranking in case of thermal efficiency after the mod: full copper, copper+alu, full alu, brass.
