Tool AA 2.0 Failed after 3 weeks. Need an LED Assembly

I purchased two Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 lights from Amazon 4 weeks back, and one of them failed.

Amazon came through and gave me a refund, and said to keep the carcass.

I swapped out until I found that the pill(?) was the culprit.

Is that the proper term for the LED assembly?

Where can someone purchase a replacement LED assembly?

Prefer the CW version for greater brightness, but not necessary.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Pill is the correct term for this assembly. I’d try to contact Lumintop for one.

Is there an obvious problem with LED or driver? You can replace the LED part with some off the shelf 10mm LED boards, but I don’t know of any driver replacements.

Because it has a pill, it is quite easy to swap the ledboard+led.
You don’t have to poke around in a narrow tube, you can move free at your table as you like.
All it takes is a soldering iron. And a pair of very fine pointed tweezers to take the pill out.
And yes, it has a (almost concealed) counter clock wise thread.

Or you can buy the Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 HM set. It includes 2 pill’s. One Cree and one Nichia.
And if you buy the HM set, it comes with a spare pill plus a dedicated piece of equipment for changing it.

Unheard,

I haven’t separated the driver from the LED, so I don’t know which one has failed.

Is it more common for the driver to fail, or the LED?

Do you know how the LED separates from the Pill?
Unsolder the leads, and it comes out?

Thank you for your help.

Henk4U2,

So unsoldering the two leads, allows the LED and it’s PCB to be removed?

Do you know who sells the LED/PCB assemblies?

I am glad I watched the Tool AA 2.0 HM Kit being assembled. Otherwise I would have assumed the standard thread direction, and “garfed” it up.

So I do have the pill removed.

I may look into getting an HM Kit, but at this point, I was just trying to find a quick and easy repair, for the one I have.

Depending on the cost of an LED/PCB assembly, it may be cheaper just to buy an HM Kit, and use the spare pill that comes with it.

Thanks.

UPDATE: I just ordered and HM kit with the 20% code. SWEET Deal!

I am still interested in trying a replacement LED, on the defective Pill of mine, if anyone could point me in the direction of where they might be obtained?

Thanks everyone.

Yes.

Impossible to say what it is, but maybe there’s something obvious like a shortcut on the LED board or a wire came loose due to bad solder joint.

Oops, sorry, it’s a AA, not an AAA. LED board is larger.

Ledboards+led’s are not so expensive.
Unless you wan to reflow a new led to the old ledboard, but I am not capable of that (yet?).
Either way, you should measure the diameter of the ledboard and snoop around of the site of
Fasttech

Henk4U2 and Unheard,

Thanks so much for your tech tips, and for providing the links to LED’s.

Have a Happy New Year!
