I know Kobe was a big loss for the sport so those who follow the team or the series will be more effected by this loss. When I heard about it and what they were doing I felt more sorrow for the youth lost in the accident. The daughter and her friends. My prayers are with them all.
Depends who it is, of course. Some deaths, it’s like reading an entry in an encyclopædia, ie, has no impact whatsoever. Other times, it’s a kick in the nuts especially after you hear the reason why for the death.
Eg, Peter Tomarken. Game-show host of “Press Your Luck”, if anyone recalls.
He and his wife were members of “Angel Flight”, who’d use their own private plane, on their own dime, to do things like transport patients in dire need to various hospitals. They were both on their way to transport a patient when their plane lost power and crashed, and both he and his wife were killed.
So, someone who can just throw/hit/kick a ball better’n other people, well, yeah, any death is tragic, but you just read the story and then move on to the weather or puzzle-page or whatever.

My take is that death is an enemy to all people.

About 55 million people die every year so I'm not going to take it personally, but someone close to me will always affect me. The only celebrity I cared about that died was Robin Williams.
He was another good one. We could start a list. Jerry Garcia, Tom Petty.
Here is a short one:
SRV[Stevie Ray Vaughan],dies in a very similar way. In a helicopter, in fog that should have never taken off,
Bruce Lee, Jimi Hendrix,Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison[even though he was nuts!],Jim Croce, Buddy Holly, John Lennon,JFK…ON and on and on.
I am old enough to remember all of those famous deaths with the exception of Buddy Holly.
Yes, it made me sad, I am human with emotions. At the same time, I have a life to live and focused on the joy they brought and Not the tragedy of their deaths.
When we are consumed by the mortality of others, we lose focus on our own lives.
After thinking about it more and looking at the above two posts, yes, I guess there were much more than I thought. Bothered me when Bruce Lee died so I guess the list could go on and on.
Yeah, I must be a sociopath. I can’t recall ever giving a s**t when any actor or athlete died. My usual reaction is, “Why the *$&! is everybody freaking out about it, and acting like their entire family was just killed. The world will go on just fine.”

If an artist (singer, moviestar, writer, painter, whatever) has been doing things that have really touched you, has influenced you or even has made you make certain decisions in life then it wouldn’t be normal not to care if that person died. Even if you’d never met him or her in person.
