3.7v CR123

I have a Fenix PD30 r2. It uses 3v CR123’s. Is it okay to use rechargeable 3.7v CR123’s ? Will the higher voltages ruin my flashlight?

I don’t have one of those particular lights but, I have used 16340/RCR123’s in many 3 volt lights with no issues. Even in lights that take 2, 3volt CR123A’s, I have been able to use 2 16340/RCR123 with no issues as well.

That’s great as I have 4 Ultrafires in storage.

Using two 3.7v 16340 cells in the PD30 is a baaaaad idea. The input voltage limit on that light is 6.0v. Two 16340 cell will output more than 6.0v. If you use two 16340's you risk of frying the circuit, sooner rather than later. That's the least worst outcome. You also run the risk of starting a fire. That would be bad. Very bad.

Safety first.

I’ve had the similar PD32 for 8 years and as DTD states above, running two 3.7v 16340s in series will most probably blow the driver. They come hot off the charger at 4.2v, so 8.4v in series.

Now, 3.2v RCR123As are another matter, since they come hot off the charger at ~3.5v-3.6v and that increase is a bit more benign.

We don’t use RCR123 and 16340 interchangeably, as they mean two different things.

I guess I can look for some rcr123 rechargeables. I just received my Sofirn 16340 too. Just wondering what I can do with my 16340 now?

I’ll take ‘Should I buy a 16340 light?’ for $500, Alex.

Hey now that’s and idea cuz I’d hate to see my 16340’s all alone in the corner. I’m sure if the batteries could talk, they tell me the same thing.
Gonna go chk our Fenix soon!

throw them in garbage bin where they belong.

They were thrown away (Staples) a week ago :-). Hey I just looked at Fenix and not many choices. Can someone recommend a 16340 flashlight that’s below $50?

Olight S1 Mini on Amazon is $37 and some change. High CRI 5500K. Super small and fairly bright. If you are looking for a mini hot rod I’m not real sure.

You can get the Acebeam TK16 from Illumn.com and simply use coupon code “blacknovember” to make it under $50.

Hey that’s a nice Olight pkg. It doesn’t ship to Canada though so I’ll be looking again. My preference would be more spill than throw as I plan to keep it in the vehicle. Range of 500-800 would be okay.

Hey that’s a cool looking light too. And it has Osram led! Never had one yet. Should be a good fit for the vehicle. Just maybe…
