14500/AA Host*Kaidomain*

Mountain Electronics has 10, 12, and 14 mm MCPCBs

Interesting he doesn’t sell the host on his store

Oh ok nice…14,17mm and will fit too. and as I read in an older post where they dremelled the 17 is another way. Yeah I haven’t come upon many sites that sell 14500 hosts so when I saw it today I was quite surprised. I dunno if I’d want to call the host a Manta ray though. It doesn’t look like a ray to me?

Hey no 15mm boards anywhere. Ah well I guess I'll order a 14mm. But I'll probably hack the 17 to 15 before the 14 gets here. Then I'll have an extra 14mm driver. Then the cycle starts over again.

Hmmm wonder why Kai mentions 15mm?

"Product Description:

- DIY Flashlight host for Cree XP (3535 LEDs). Design, Create, Build your favorite LED flashlight.

  • Suitable for 17mm driver board and 15mm x 1 LED PCB"

Secret stash?Like a skid of 15mm's back in the warehouse somewhere?

If anyone needs 14500 with bigger MCPCB, take a look at the Jaxman E3: shelf design, 16mm MCPCB, 17mm driver, no glue (at least in my sample). Mine is rocking with 219b on MCPCB and driver from led4power.

14500 with 21mm in diameter ? Wow that’s bulky :frowning:

LOL. That kept me away from them. There are 18650 lights just a few mm’s bigger than that.

Sofirn SF14 > Convoy T2 > Jaxman E3 > Nitefox ES10K > Nitecore D10 > Amutorch S3 > Lumintop Tool AA V2.0 > Skilhunt M150 > DQG Slim Ti

Both the Convoy T2 and Jaxman E3 are tough and will take a beat as EDC lights.
They are not slim as a Tool AA, but if you want a resistant light, those are the way to go.

BTW, on the T2 there is a part in yhe edge of the shelf that protrudes so maybe only 14mm fit adequatly.

How do you find it compared to the D10? Also any good NiMH/14500 drivers with a low moonlight and L-M-H modes?

I don’t use the D10 much, I use more the T2 (modded, using a led4power driver and Luxeon V).
About a driver with low ML, the Jaxman E3 has it.
It is more suited to be used with alkalines and Ni-MH but can also use 14500s.
I don’t remeber exactly but I guess there was a bit of PWM on that driver, though.
I turned the E3 into a triple with a led4power driver as well

I think part of the appeal would be the variety of drivers available on 17mm PCB’s.

That said, Lexel offers a variant of Texas Avenger on a 15mm board that I think will fit the Tool AA.

They fit but have to be slightly filed to fit the pill.
I recently modded two Tool AA with those drivers!

Same like the Xeno E03 (96×21). Thing is, it’s indestructible.

I was wondering if a Cree XM-L2 T6 led is compatible with a board for Cree XM-L T6? Reason I ask is Led is L2 and board only says L??

I can’t answer your questio, about the XM-L vs XM-L2 size, but I can tell your that XM-L2 leds won’t fit perfectly under this host’s reflector.
XP-L2 and Luxeon V are tight fit, but XM-L2 is larger than the reflector hole.

Hey thanks for the tips! So would it be ok if I modded the reflector hole bigger for the L2? Seems like it might fit but might have to enlarge hole myself?

This is how the reflector looks like, and how it sits on XM-L2. You can probably mod it, but…I am not sure how larger it needs to become to sit well. Meaning, I am not sure if after modded it would sit/fit well.
The reflector is more suited for 3535 leds that 5050.

Comparison with XP-L2 and XP-G2 (notice that with XP-G2 you must use a gasket):

Yeah true and looks like L2 needs a bit of work. Okay will check out gaskets and 5050’s and maybe Luxeon too.
Btw, your Skillhunt in your photo looks real good with the blue glass ring and blue button ring. I like the contrast between the blue and then all black! :+1:

:stuck_out_tongue: Sorry all, I meant XP series led and not XM series led. Must off been too excited when I started the thread and missed some details.
At least I got info on variety of things from everyone before I caught my mistake.

XP-L HD and XP-L2 will probably give you the highest output (within the 3V CREE leds), but can generate some tint shift, even if this reflector is Orange Peel.
XP-L HI would be a good choice , you wouldn’t have problems with opening the reflector and they have almost none tint shift.

Yesterday I had trouble with the Luxeon on Convoy T2 and had to replace it. After thinking for a while I decided myself for a XP-L and I don’t regret (even if I ’d prefer the Luxeon V or V2).

Hope this helps in some way!
