Love them!
I have some preferences that take some good ones down a peg and elevate mediocre movies that follow my “rules”.
Example: An American Werewolf in London lost points because the werewolf doesn’t walk on 2 legs (my werewolf rule).
The Howling on the other hand was an okay movie but the werewolf was perfect - many added points especially because it was a practical effect.
It’s been a tradition to watch at least 1 horror movie every night in October.
I remember that one, I agree, good flick!
The reviews do indicate that Cats is a horror-ific disaster of a movie. I watched the trailer, yup it looks pretty lame.
I actually got a copy, browsed through it, and yeah, it’s pretty scary.
I’m an essential employee and working overtime. I don’t have time to watch movies and thanks to you guys, I’m losing even more sleep now priorities!!!

The Terminator Trailer - As a romance movie.
I like sci-fi horror movies. “Alien” was the most brilliant one I’d ever seen. “Aliens” was a good follow-up. They all sucked after that. “Prometheus” was OK, but I think it could’ve been much better. “The Thing” from the 1980’s was excellent. A lot of sci-fi horror movies since the proliferation of advanced CGI are often weakly or poorly written, with most of the effort going into intense gore & convincing CGI. For example, “Sunshine” had so much promise. Started out so well. Then went so wrong.
Yes, from true horror to Evil Dead 2 to robot holocaust…

Session 9 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0261983/ Takes place in the then abandoned Danvers State Hospital. The hospital is really the star of the show, like the Overlook Hotel is in The Shining. This movie got me into urban exploration. If you can't find it, torrent it. Only watch it at night.
Never enjoyed horror “monster” movies, for several reasons. First, most involve stupid plots with stupid characters doing dumb things. The monsters and villains are also mostly unlike anything in real life. There are exceptions, like the first few Aliens movies, that are at least more plausible in a science fiction, imaginary sort of action movie way.
In addition, most of the monsters are characters out of myth or peoples’ irrational fears. They don’t occur in real life, so they don’t interest me. That brings up another reason why I don’t have much interest in movies about imaginary monsters: there are enough real horrors and human monsters in the real world. I’m not entertained by them.
As for horror movies with more realistic villains of the human kind, I don’t enjoy those, either. My weekday work is devoted to investigating and prosecuting people who commit the worst atrocities against others. So, I don’t watch fictional accounts of such behavior for entertainment, as they aren’t entertaining to me. Movies like “Hostel” are very distasteful to me. I see them as easy ways to make money with no artistic value, from my point of view.
There’s a reference to Session 9 in Silent Hill 3 (the game, not the film :confounded: ). The fact that the reference is one of the creepiest in an already legendarily creepy game got me very interested in watching it. I hope it’s as good as Jacob’s Ladder.
I love scary movies. As others have mentioned there are many categories of scary/horror movies, and many good and bad (usually bad) examples in each category. I tend to not like slasher style or gory movies as much, though there are some good examples of those. I prefer movies that portray an environment of fear and dread. I think the feeling that I like from scary movies is one of a primal fear that activates my “reptile brain”. The feeling of terror or dread that puts you in “survival mode”. For me they are a fun escape as I’m reassured that the reality after the movie ends is not so scary (usually, when there’s no deadly global pandemic going on).
Many scary movies will have an investigative aspect to them, where the characters track down clues and learn more about the origins of the supernatural phenomenon they are experiencing. I like these because when they are well done it adds a certain realism to the weird things that are happening in the movie. A couple examples that I can think of right now of this style are “the ring” and “sinister”.
I’m also a fan of monster style scary movies. This is probably the most common scary movie because there are so many really bad B-movies around. But I like a well done monster movie because there’s really nothing more primal than being faced with a mysterious and powerful creature, especially when the setting is in the woods. A great recent monster movie is “the ritual” on Netflix. The acting and feeling of complete isolation make this movie.
