Test/review of Shockli IMR14500 1050mAh (Orange) 2020

Thanks for the review, HKJ!

Are you gonna be testing the Vapcell H10 as well? From other reviews it seems like it has more capacity than the orange Shockli, it would be interesting to compare their voltage curves.

I do not know about H10, but I have a L10 from Vapcell.

The L10 is rated for1050mAh/3A while the H10 is rated for 1000mAh/10A. I’m not a battery expert but given that they have similar specs and are released in the same period I would expect that the H10 and this Shockli are the same cell.

Seems like it for sure. However someone made a test of the H10 and reached close to 1000mAh, actually it surpassed 1000 at 0.1A, iirc. Although it could be because of different measuring equipment, that’s why I love HKJ’s website, where everything is tested in the same conditions.
The orange Shockli can’t even reach 950, should have been marketed as 950 and not 1050 for sure.

The H10 has been tested here:
Test Vapcell H10

It’s also important to see the curves, I think.
For example the Samsung 30Q might have less capacity than 35E, but the way it holds voltage under load means it’s actually better than the 35E for everything that requires even remotely high drain. Not only that, but the 35E’s higher capacity only shows below 3.0 volts, at that point any flashlight enthusiast would be charging their battery already.
I’m not a specialist though, I just find HKJ’s graphics really interesting and helpful.

Not much else to say besides SubLGT and djozz's comments. Even if the angle shots aren't the same, it can be clearly seen that both Vapcell H10 and this badly overrated Shockli cell come from the same OEM and are the same cell with certainty. Any differences arise from the different test platforms and/or battery grades. The top cap shape tells me the battery OEM is Heter.

From a responsible and professional point of view, the ratings of these cells are what Mooch already said: 900 mAh and 10 A. 900 mAh is a minimum capacity value which any cell should meet, whereas 10 A is the highest current for which the discharge curve still looks 0K.

P.S.: 1050 mAh and 12 A? That's enough  Shockli, that's enough.

Is Heter a good brand? First time I hear about them.

Ventsi, Heter is one of the big battery manufacturers in China. There are others like BAK, Lishen, Power Long Battery, and some lesser players like Yongdeli. Heter may not be the biggest (don't really know), but they have fairly good technology. Enerpower properly rewraps some of its cells, check Test/review of Enerpower 18650 3.2V 1800mAh (Blue), for example. You will clearly see the same top pole geometry, manufacturers usually stick to just one or two top pole geometries, as far as I know.

Thanks, didn’t know.

I think they are likely not the same. I had the same assumption when Shockli released the black 1000mah shortly after Vapcell relesed the gold 1000mah. But when I tested the Shockli, it was much higher current but lower capacity.

Comparing the HKJ’s graph and Mooch’s graph, the Shockli makes about 840mah at 10A and 820mah at 15A whereas the Vapcel H10 makes 800mah at 10A and 755mah at 15A. Though they are measured using different equipment but the difference is pretty significant to believe they are different cells.

SKV89, embedding images whose links use special characters doesn't works in the simple post editor.

The temperature difference is also huge (I wonder how did Mooch hit such high figures). But still not very meaningful in my opinion. Once HKJ tests the H10, we'll have a better picture.

In any case, I still believe both H10 and this cell come from the same OEM. This is a niche product, and the manufacturer may not be stringent consistency wise. There are other variables which may affect results, I tested some batteries in an EBD-M05 some weeks ago and found myself surprised with the differences I found versus HKJ's comparable cell curves. My testing room was at 16 - 17 °C, while HKJ tests at 25 °C ambient, now that I think of it.

But well…

Thanks for fixing it! You have good points. I will buy some to test and do hope I will be pleasantly surprised like last time with the Shockli 1000mah 3A.

Damn, and I just recently got my 1000mAh black Shockli 14500s in. Well, at least those are native button-tops.

Where can I buy these? I don’t seem them on their web site.

The Vapcell H10 has been restocked at Liionwholesale.
Ordered several a few days ago :+1:

Out of curiosity, I asked when it will be available on Ali
“hello, maybe at the end of next month”

How are currently the Sofirn 14500?They was in review 2 yar ago
Thanks

Sort of off-topic for this message thread.

I’ve bought a number of Sofirn flashlights with batteries included (usually I take the battery option since batteries cannot be shipped to our country as is, and has to be included with a flashlight)…

I’ve had quite a number of Sofirn batteries now, and I generally do capacity test and compare them (do capacity test, measure AC IR with YR1030 resistance tester, and measure their weight with a digital scale). I hadn’t really done measuring of dimensions (diameter/height) — all some are visually different.

In my limited experience, Sofirn uses different batteries under the wrapper. I’ve detected at least 3 different types of Sofirn “4000mAh” 21700, at least 4 different types of Sofirn “5000/5500mAh” 26650 and maybe 3 types of Sofirn “3000mAh” 18650s. Sofirn labels their 14500 “900mAh”, I haven’t compared Sofirn 14500s much, but I’ve noted they come in slightly different “sizes”, some Sofirn 900mAh 14500 are a bit shorter, some are a bit taller, and while usually the capacity test range from 800-900+ mAh (using MC3000 to do capacity test). So it’s likely a bit difficult to say which “Sofirn 14500” one will be getting, as it changes over time…

They were supposed to be available at the end of June, and they are still not available. Anyone know when it will be available for sale?
