Looks semi interesting. Definitely not a “budget” price, at around $120.
Looks like a great light to hand to someone, no complicated UI to explain!
My concern is the mode spacing and how the ring operates, if it only has the 5 detents (off-low-med-high-turbo) there’s no moonlight and barely a usable low. Now if those are just the detent positions but it’s infinitely adjustable in between the clicks this would be a winner.
Price is high but not out of line for Fenix or other high quality rotary lights. I do miss the rear click like the V11R for instant on.
I guess this is another way to continue refusing to put a ui that provides instant access to both moonlight and high/turbo.
Perfect simple UI that anybody can use without training. Also has usb-C charge. The first of its kind.
I wish Fenix lights were not glued so tight that it is practically impossible to open up. I would love to put another emitter in there instead of their default CW.
I’m not liking how all of their latest high-output offerings have a 30-lumen “lowest” mode lately, but I do terrible want to try that PD40R v2. I’d also like to see how their mechanical selector ring works while still being waterproof.
I am 99% certain it is not infinitely adjustable. The video does show the flashlight jump between each level.
I really like the look of it, and the UI. But, I find it too expensive for me, now that I have experienced Convoy and Sofirn lights. I am happy enough with my Sofirn SD05.
Review of the Fenix PD40R: Fenix PD40R v2 Flashlight Kit Review! - YouTube
Hey all. New member and first comment. I was researching the SST70 and found this forum and quite quickly this thread for the pd40r v2. I just got mine in the mail today and it just finished charging….
It joins my other Fenix lights (PD36R V2, and PD35). I’m a big fan of Fenix quality and engineering, though not without minor quibbles that are largely irrelevant.
The PD40R V2 is a beefy light - quite a lot larger than the 36r despite having the same battery (5000mAh 3.6v). The difference is in the head design and ring electronics. I can confirm 100% that the set points are firm detents and NOT “smoothly” adjustable. I like this, myself, since it ensures no bumping will change your desired output setting.
The lumens are widely known but I’ll add them here:
30 / 350 / 1000 / 3000 / and a blinding 2500 lumen strobe.
I’ll edit this comment with some imgur pics
