How to choose flashlight. Main things in simple words.

BUMP - Very well done. Wish I found this 2 months ago when I first started researching flashlights!

Can always add:

It must list “tactical” in its description. If it’s not “tactical”, it’s garbage.

:smiling_imp:

But these is almost always black. So don’t that make em’ almost all

ways...tactical?

I kept getting confused and mixed up between throw and candela numbers so did some research and wrote up what I found out. Also added some more explanation and a quick reference:

Hopefully this will make it easy to compare 2 lights when one’s specs says 100kcd and another says 600m.

Here’s some of the numbers to save you a click:

  • 500cd = 45m
  • 1kcd = 63m
  • 5kcd =141m
  • 10kcd = 200m
  • 20kcd = 282m
  • 50kcd = 447m
  • 100kcd = 632m
  • 200kcd =894m
  • 500kcd = 1,414m
1 Thank

hm

interesting, thanx!

√(cd*4) also gives you FL1 throw in meters from candela numbers.

(Throw^2)/4 gives candela from FL1 throw.

wow, i`m glad no less no meet such a positive feedback.

Awsome!!

Thanks for your hard work, really professional.

and BTW if anyone would like to try Acebeam, could kindly tell me, I could offer you guys 10% off for Acebeam’s flashlight.

Hey guys. I am new here, just was looking for a flashlight and stumble across your forum. Need advice as I am a real newbie and don’t really know anything about the flashlights
I wanna find smth good for my husband, he riding a bike all the time and sometimes at night, so I thought a new powerful flashlight would be a great idea for a present. I found one, but I don’t even know if it’s good….you know, I see only that it’s pretty, but what about the technical side?

i suppose u may buy sofirn c8g for him, that covers most of need for reasonable price

Very well said.
As a newbie now I fully understand the basic thing about flashlight.
Thank u.

Many Thanks for sharing this useful info
It really helps

Hi Lumeniac, first of all great thread and thanks for the useful information. 2nd I tried covering this same idea about a month ago in a video and I will post a link to this post in the description so people can learn the in depth knowledge you have. I’ve been a lurker for years here and on candlepowerforums. In fact i forgot my old username and pw here I made a new one yesterday. 3rdly, Do you have videos up to watch as well? My knowledge on lights is dim at best so any more info out there in audio and visual formats? Thanks!

-Jon

Thanks Now I can watch more videos and add them to my library of resources.

Hello,

I am new here. I’m leaving soon for a motorcycle road trip in the Sahara. So I need a lamp that shines better than my Convoy s2+.
I managed to identify 2-3 models that I find good for my next adventure. But ultimately, I think other brands and models will please me. I might collect some :stuck_out_tongue:

In short, thank you for this thread which helped me to identify my need and enter the luminous world
Thank you to all of you

Hoopoe

do you mean to light the road while driving motorcycle?

they go so fast, you need about 10,000 lumens

seems impractical

Define “shines better”.

(upvote)

wle translation: “What’s the problem now?”

Hello,

No, luckily I have headlights on my motorcycle for the road
I need a flashlight to camp in the desert.
See a possible threat arrive over 300 meters with the widest possible field.
Maybe even an exploration part at first light.
Under the tent I already have a brennenstuhl OLI 0300 A, but maybe let myself be tempted by the Sofirn BLF LT1 although I find it quite bulky if you want to stay light.
Anyway, sorry for this speech, I’m not very comfortable with social “norms”.
