[Canceled] Sofirn SP70 BLF Edition

Thank you

I’ve already switched it over to the Sofirn Sp70 driver and it’s getting 3600 lumens instead of the previous 2850 so that’s nice. I ended up just re soldering the wires as it was less hassle than filing in notches.

The Sofirn TK70 gets 7200 lumens with bypassed springs using button top PLB 26650’s, the same ones Sofirn sells but my supplier added a button for me.

The L6 had some great potential. That’s the issue I have with Convoy is Simon isn’t into using drivers/firmware of the competition e.g., Anduril & NarsilM.

Why the low 3600? It should be higher than that.

Cool - Yeah didn’t see this until now. Didn’t know if you had already done it. Glad it worked out. With the XHP 70.2 it should provide more output.

I have no idea what the bin is for the Convoy vs Wainlight, both are 5000K temp. My Convoy is now back to stock driver with sense resistor mod, and lit side switch running just a tad over 4500lm on Texas Ace lumen tube at start up. Pretty satisfied with that. Especially with stock LED wires, and spring bypass.

This is the XHP70 in NW, not the XHP70.2.

It could be the dual high resistance springs on the Sofirn driver if it’s low

I think his was using the XHP 70 not the newer XHP 70.2 so output is a bit lower. Even with resistor mod it would go up only to about 3800lumen based on Vestureofblood’s posted output.

Not too familiar with the XHP 70 output vs 70.2 but could be the reason.

Okay, that makes sense. My CW xhp70 seems to max out at around 12 amps and the NW is usually a lower bin than CW. I thought you had a 70.2 in there.

Soooooo, what ever happened with this? Did we all just forget about it, decide we don’t want it, or did things fall through?

Welcome to BLF on your first post!

Lux-Perpetua is running this with his contacts at Sofirn, and he was out for a while, recently returned. Hoping these posts will illicit a response. The driver part is easy if we go with a FET and 7135 design. Basically the driver is already there because a driver designed for the L6 exists, and can run Anduril/Anduril2.

Most of the other things are tweaks/improvements to the light, such as SMO reflector, improvements in design, SS bezel, etc. What makes this light special is the big reflector and dual cells. It's an excellent host for high amps and max throw out of an XHP70.2. Most of the changes shouldn't add much to cost, accept for maybe the SS bezel.

It's also been made clear by Funtastic (and I've seen it on mine) that the SP70's have a poor machined shelf the MCPCB sits on -- this is a QC/production problem that needs to be addressed in this version as well.

I’m surprised people want an SMO reflector. I tested one and preferred the stock lightly OP version. The beam looked better and distance was very similar.

I haven’t looked at the shelf. Is it a bit rough?

I agree - this OP seems to work very well. In the past though if you recall, SMO was a big thing for big XHP70.2 throwers - I got a couple already, think the L6 and MT07. Here is one thread on it: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/42286. VOB compared throw #'s, etc.

Well on mine, there's a small bump in the middle, but Funtastic bought about 10 over a period of months took a vid and posted about the lack of flatness. Not sure in which way - at least the middle bump and burrs around holes, just not sure of the flatness of the surface itself.

Every light I break down and/or mod, I check the drilled holes for burrs and the shelf for flatness, so I'm quite used to detecting and fixing them.

+1 for BLF Edition.

I know some think it’s not necessary in such a light, but I would love to see a high(er) CRI option.

I will get in touch with Barry asap. Driverwise, I was always hoping for something like Convoy‘s FX-31 2S/3S buckdriver that should physically fit into SP70 and that would offer more stable output. Sofirn has successfully launched their new SP35 flashlight with constant current regulation, so maybe there’s some room left for even more potential in SP70 BLF edition.

I wonder if Sofirn was interested in the GT FC40 12V LED that Simon is now testing in the L6. Can it be run with 6V or would it require to use a boostdriver?

I don't know a thing about that LED. Is there any info on it?

L6 OP is pretty aggressive so you notice a bigger difference.
SP70 OP is almost like SMO. Not a big difference. (In my opinion) I use the stock reflector in my SP70.

Taken from Simon’s Convoy thread...

AFAIK, the output is less than XHP70.2 but it comes with 90CRI.

maukka has offered to testing a sample of the L6 outfitted with this LED.

I did a test on that led in sep 2019

In short: it is 12V (no 6V version), very high CRI with good tint, and it can match the output of a XHP70.2, but at the cost of twice the power.

GT FC40 emitter would be amazing. I am happy to trade lumens for 90CRI.

This is already NOT a small light, so what about

3S or 4S cells (longer tube)
Boost or Buck driver

Am I the only one who would prefer a sustainable 1500 real world lumens, than a flamethrower for a few seconds?

To stay with 2 cells, then a boost would be needed. Who will design and build the driver? It sure complicates the project maybe, it all depends on the driver, if going with this LED.

I’m not sure if anyone else here has the Wurkkos TS70, but that light is pretty fantastic. Exact same dimensions as the SP70 except for the head diameter being slightly smaller. OP reflector as well. Same lumens, lower candela since the light has a much larger hotspot. Both lights are advertised as 5500 lumens on turbo and 2 lumens on “moonlight,” but have different brightness levels for low, medium, and high. I personally like the the UI on the TS70 more than the SP70, although it lacks the ramping effect in group 2 of the UI.

The advertised effective range of both lights is in the same ballpark, but if you ask me, even though more floody, the TS70 seems slightly brighter. It even seems to have better range… But that’s just me. I might have a defective SP70 since my side switch indicator goes “orange” very shortly after putting in freshly charged cells.

Anyway, just thought I’d bring it to everyone’s attention if nobody else had experienced the Wurkkos TS70. It’s also cheaper than the Sofirn on Amazon. All that being said, I am still VERY interested in a BLF edition SP70. And honestly would love to see a Wurkkos TS70 BLF Edition as well. Just a thought. I am FAR less knowledgeable than the average seasoned user here on BLF, so I’m learning a lot of new details and ways to improve our lights and distinguish the great from the good and the good from the garbage. Be kind please haha, I’m just a simpleton.

The Wurkkos TS70 looks like a rebranded Sofirn TK70 which is an updated Thorfire S70.
