[Available again! - BLF special edition light] new Sofirn AAA twisty high CRI 5mm LED

what colors?

and can we have some fancy metals?

Anyone else interested in a Titanium, Copper, or Mokume host?

Not sure if Sofirn will do that, but I was thinking about the colours used in the C01S, such as orange, olive green, desert tan!

Hum…nah, it would defeat the purpose of this light (for me)!
Too much hassle already to bring these C01 wwith Yuji leds back to life again (thanks Sofirn for it!!!), so fancying other things…not my league for such light!

Titanium would be fun.

I haven’t seen Sofirn do any fancy metals, and I would be surprised if they started with a budget light.

The probable colors were stated upthead:

In the C01s thread, Barry also previously posted a picture of some color samples.

thanks, the colors look nice

as to fancy metals… Im planting a seed
McGizmo Sapphire w 5mm Yuji:

Sofirn is sitting on a goldmine if they choose to venture into Fancy Metals.
AAA size keeps costs to a minimum, while optimizing Cachet.

While I’m doubtful they’d do it, I’d be all over any exotic metal versions of the C01(S) as well. Titanium AAA lights usually seem to do well, and lots of other companies do well selling brass/copper/Ti lights at all sorts of price ranges.

I’m not sure how great titanium would be in a twisty light in this kind of price range honestly.

If anyone has an extra C01R they could part with I’d love one, I missed the boat on this one somehow. If not, I’ll wait till the next batch, I think I saw one in the works?

Don’t worry. AFAIK, the next batch of C01R is scheduled already. The only difference is that they now use Luminus SST20-DR (660nm) instead of Cree XP-E2 photo red (660nm). Since the TIR optic works great with SST20 4.000K 95CRI (see beam of C01S) I expect a visible improvement in the deep red beam as well.

C01 using a 5mm 670nm LED will probably be a nice add-on / alternative to those who want to explore the lower end of brightness with deep red light. Using the original driver, I suppose its maximum output is not much more than 1lm (taking into account that Yuji BC made 8lm max). Maybe they can tweak the output a little bit but please keep in mind that deep red LEDs are significantly less bright than white ones.

I don’t know what UI Sofirn will be using on C01 with 670nm deep red but I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes with the original 2-mode UI (hopefully Low - High). My recommendation would be a two mode UI (Low/High) with 0.2lm for low and 1lm for high.

Should I get the chance to testing the new versions (Sophia 3.400K and 670nm deep red), I will take and post some beamshots / whitewallshots in comparison to all the other versions (C01 Yuji BC ww/cw, C01S, C01R).

The original C01 has a single mode, like the similar Fenix E01. The new version will almost certainly be the same. I don’t know if multiple modes is possible without a new driver.

The C01s does have a different driver.

Sorry, I mixed something up. I stand corrected and revised my previous post. Thanks for the hint.

thanks for the info. :+1:

It's most probably quite a challenge to get the differences of the beam and brightness (XP-E2 PR vs. SST20-DR) made visible on a picture taken by a camera but I was told it should be definitely visible to the naked eye. Anyway, if I get the opportunity I will try my best to highlight the differences (provided there are some) between both emitters, using my camera on long exposure with both C01R lights on ultra-low brightness.

I have already C01S with sst20,for my preference I hope beam will be a bit more wide with Red version.

although I would also enjoy a wider beam option for things within arms reach

the existing narrow beam works well past arms reach
the C01S beam, and the C01R beam are almost the same (same optic different LED size).

from 4 feet away my C01R has a larger, more useful hotspot for me, than my Lumintop Copper Tool modded to 660nm:

Apologies if this has been stated before. I searched the thread and found info about lego-ing the original C01 with the Fenix E01. But has anyone tried to lego the C01 and the C01S? Or do we know for certain that the (new / upcoming) C01 and current C01S would go together?

If they do go together, I think I might order several so I can have different body tube colors. Has anyone tried?

yes, my C01, C01S and C01R all lego

Thanks! Now I hope that Barry’s teaser picture becomes a product before November so I can order a bunch for Christmas gifts.

I would like C01 host with modes bright, the low below 0.5lm

I hope nobody minds doubleposting here. I have also posted this in the C01R thread but one of these lights will have a 5mm LED, so it might be interesting here as well.

Barry was so kind to send me a quick whitewall-shot from his smartphone camera.

From left to right...

Sofirn C01 5mm 670nm (prototype)

Sofirn C01R SST20-DR 660nm (prototype)

Sofirn C01R XP-E2 PR 660nm (series version)

Comments based upon some feedback from Barry:

  • actual perception of deep red color is more intense than indicated here
  • C01R SST20-DR is quite similar in maximum brightness - although actual brightness may differ but needs to be measured using a lux meter
  • hotspot beam shape/profile of C01R SST20-DR is yet to be reviewed in detail as any artifacts cannot be assessed on that picture - for now it looks quite similar to XP-E2 PR
  • production of C01 using the 670nm 5mm emitter may be revoked as the beam shows significant distortions - final decision is not made yet
