They've been there for some time. There are also bare boards for these bare emitters.

Anyone tips on how to solder/glue these on a heatsink?

Should be hard because of the +- pads on the bottom; or is it possible to disable them by cutting the corners.

You'll also need aluminum boards for XM-L leds like these. To solder these kinds of surface mount components, reflow soldering is used. A paste solder like Mechanics/Lodestar is spread on the plate just to cover the pads area. Then you place the emitter onto this board and the paste should help holding the emitter still. The board and emitter is heated together to something like 240-260 degrees Celcius and the solder melts and fixes the emitter in place.

Many people seem to use a temperature controlled grill/oven as a cheap solution for this. Better is to have a reflow station.

humm, thanks reflowing is not going to happen too much work and poisones lead all over the place.

I think I will just solder on top of the led and gleu the led onto the copper disc with non elec. conductive glue

It's just XML's contacts are at the bottom and you may have to solder to these points. Cutter sells 14mm stars, KD and DX has 16mm and 20mm stars. It may be easier to just buy from Cutter.

I don't have much reflowing experience but I already bought those bare stars from KD and some paste solder. In my case, it is a bit more difficult because I am planning to take out an emitter from a 20mm star and transfer to these unknown diameter but looking small stars. I plan to try this with some cheap leds first. Youtube has some good DIY videos for reflow soldering, none requiring expensive equipment.

Thanks, There are also contacts at the top (corners) I have tried, it works (it is not mentioned in the Cree pdf last time I checked)

I just notice that KD is also selling the XM-L in a less green tint (1A) on a star.

Not that I disliked the (1D) tint but prefer a bit more red.

Cutter is, I believe, only feasible in larger quantities because of the shipping costs


Bins 1A and 1D both lie on the black body curve and thus have no greenish or purplish tint. The difference between them is that 1A (6500K-7000K) is a little more bluish than 1D (6100K-6500K).

I have a XM-L 1A led and I think it is a bit greenisch (not like wolf urine like in my Fenix L2D flashlights)

@ pipopopo Where did you purchase 1D tint and on what star? Is it from DX? I'm just thinking about that one.
