I know some hate the “suggest me a flashlight” threads, but i am new to flashlights. I mean, i use them all the time but don’t understand all the pieces and parts that make it good etc…
I am hoping those kind enough to answer this thread can help me get a flashlight i can use.
requirements for me are;
1. Has to use AA batteries (Energizer Lithium Primary batteries ) it will be in a cold or hot car for emergency’s.
2. Would prefer a 2 AA design but 1 AA is fine as long as its bright &, something that would fit in the pocket of a car door.
3. Needs to have some throw AND some spill (flood) - this is an all purpose light that may need to light up something in the woods or be used to walk the dog at night.
4. Looking to spend $25 or less (because i may buy a few of them)
5. Don’t want a light with 18650’s or anything that i have to charge.
6. Needs to be somewhat bright, 100 lumens or higher
7. would like it to be reliable and Waterproof (used for camping, hiking and fishing, and ATV’ing and ……….)
8. I am looking for that all purpose light so to speak.
R5-A3 with XPG should be fine. With L91 batteries.
Lots of people will suggest a Sipik or clone (waterproof or resistant?) but I don’t have one because my zoomie experience hasn’t been good - probably because I don’t have one.
Fenix E21 can be found for $25-30 on sale. Tight/snug fitting O-ring gaskets, works great with eneloops or energizer Lithium primaries. My kids use it as a pool/bath toy… frequently submerged for long periods.

Man I thought you were going to ask for something difficult !!
Have 5 AA’s with the Terralux drop-in’s . It’s an amazing transformation…
As easy as changing a bulb….
Takes them from blah to YEAH !!
The Nite-Ize drop-in’s on the other hand , are a waste of money…
I like the runtimes on the iTP lights and they can sometimes be found for a bit less. Also like my Thrunite T10 in that class, but more for the firefly and medium.
Another option would be to find a Solarforce or other P60 host body for AAs (L2R?) with get the Solarforce 3 mode low voltage drop-in. I’ve used one of those drop-ins daily and the XPG beam is pretty much what it sounded like you were asking about. Could even put together something using a new cheap incan minimag with the Match mod for your own “custom” light.
I’d also suggest looking at the Terralux Lightstar 220 or 300. Yes, I agree they’re not 220 or 300 lumens but they’re well built, simple AA lights with a lifetime warranty. I have several 220s and a 300 and for a while EDCd a 220 for work, put it through some abuse without any problem.
There’s plenty of options that fit your requirements, happy hunting!
Oops OP you might want to look into this. I have used lithium primaries 2-3 times in my E21 and it works fine, it didn’t occur to me to ask Fenix about it.
