As an engineer, I use mine for inspections, so it does not get abused, but yes, I do use a 18650 light at work. A Solarforce L2 with MF 3 mode, P60, XML drop-in to be exact. I also charge mine at work, I have two Xtar WP2 chargers, one for work and one at home, it is a fairly safe charger, thank goodness. I accidentally left a battery on charge overnight, recently, and came in the next day, no fire or bad things happened. The charger stopped charging when the proper charge was reached and everything was fine.
I use 18650's at work..I also bring my charger in to charge them at work..
I use my Zebralight at work with an 18650 in it. Single cell lights don't worry me. I can't find any reports of a single cell exploding.
I have a charger in my office and generally have an 18650 light or two with me. I only use the office charger to top off the cells that are in the lights I have that day. I never leave it unattended...
I opened up a control panel at work and found a cheap 1 bay charger with a cheap unlabeled 18650 charging in it. Nobody knew whose it was. I explained it was dangerous and unplugged it. A week later it was still in there charging again. Hasn’t blown up… yet.
My hobby charger gets used more at work than at home - mostly for patients' phones when they forgot to bring the charger with them. I have a LiPo pack with all sorts of adapters but every Samsung and LG I've come across seems to need a different charger - so I pull the batteries and charge them on the Turnigy (B6 clone).
Unfortunately most of my patients seem to own Korean phones.
Hopefully the manufacturers will start paying attention to the ITU requirements and use a micro-usb connection for both data and charging.
There is always at least one 18650 light in my bag or on my person.
i would not know what to do without my shiningbeam s-mini at work.
also, the bc-40 that is always in my county comm "bail-out-bag" that i carry all my crap in.
i charge the cells at home in a Pila recharger, and replace them fairly frequently.
is this that hard? or am i missing something?
I use 18650 at work in L2m, it is an inspection light mainly. Worth its weight in gold when used in maintenance jobs as headlamp (heavy though…).
i really should get some sheapo charger to work. I now carry batts to home for reacharge. About once a week. When in maintenance, once a day.
At work I can use charger in a lot of places, which are rated as fireproof metal work areas so no actual fire hazard…
Probably 1000 guys on here use 18650s. Has anyone had any firsthand experience with catastrophic failures?

I have a WF-139 at work and cells often will be on the charger over a weekend. Been doing this for two years (with the same cells) without an issue. They are all used in single-cell lights. I have yet to see a way to make a single cell pop. I've never taken a hammer or shotgun shell to one, though. :)
Thanks for all the replies. I use my 18650 lights at work, but I just won't charge them in my office. How could I explain to management that my cheap Li-ion cells toasted in my cheap charge and torched my whole office. I don't have the ability to stay in close proximity to the charger while charging.
I have a TR-001 that says CE, but does anyone know if it actually is? It does not have UL or CSA markings.
Xtar MP1 is 7$. Buy it and you can leave battery in charger forever
Are there any UL & CE certified 18650 chargers though?
I have the “classic” UltraFire WF-139 as well as the TrustFire TR-006 (26650 capable), and both are CE-labelled.

It says the Pila IBC is UL listed… that may be, but mine doesn’t have a UL logo on the bottom of it. Plus Pila might be jerks and say that they are only listed if you use their batteries.
There’s also a discussion of fake CE/UL markings that might be relevant.
If it was me and I was scared of the lawyers, I’d ask my work to buy the charger and batteries. At that point, it’s their problem.
I bought a quality single bay smart-charger and Xtar branded Panasonic protected cells so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I don’t charge my cells at work though, but I do charge them at home and sometimes in the car when I’m away camping or vacationing for a week. I don’t want my charger going up in smoke in my house nor my car, so I prefer to spend a bit more on a good setup. I only have one 18650 light so far, so I only need one charger and 2 cells to cover my lighting needs right now. In the future I expect to have another one or two 18650 lights and will buy more cells a that time, but the charger I have will do to charge them all as needed. I typically recharge my 18650’s once every few days, or both once a week. I usuallly charge overnight so I’m good to go in the morning.
