Whether it will be more convenient if a EDC remove the memory function?

For a EDC,it must be simple and easy to use.Less useless function is better, but it is hard to say the memory function is useful or useless. What’s your opion? Whether it will be more convenient if I buy a EDC without the memory function?
:quest:

Recently I modded an EDC with a hi-med-lo driver, but left the memory function off. Personally I do think that I would prefer the light to start at the last mode and not always on high, so I plan to activate the memory mode on the driver. For bigger flashlights I don't think I would want to have a memory mode.

Thank you for your opinion.

I like an EDC light that always starts in its lowest mode and has no memory, so that when I need the light in a dark restaurant or theatre or similar, the light won’t distract and annoy my spouse and friends and others.

But best of all for me is a control ring, so when you turn it on you can instantly dial it up to whichever output you need. Control rings aren’t usually available on the smaller EDC lights though.

i think of "mode memory" as "programming my light". if i want the light to start in low mode, i program it this way, e.g. while entering the restaurante. it's fun and no big deal. Yes, in a social situation bright light could shock people, not good. And when i am back alone by myself, i program it to start in MED mode. MED is great for EDC purposes to start with. Long runtimes and head doesnt get hot.

True, mode memory is a rather seldom feature afaik, and more so with bigger lights.

I agree, out of all the lights I have the 2 with control rings end up being carried most often. I keep the ring at the lowest setting and then turn it if I need more light. I guess you could look at it as a manual memory mode.

This question reminds me why I like my ZL SC600 so much. You get the mode you want instantly. For low, just hold it for more than 0.5sec, for high, just a quick press.

The xeno has M-L-H with no memory which is about perfect for everyday use. I’d take that simple programming over even perfect 5 mode memory nevermind the 2-min “memory” that some lights have. To “start” on low, just press again something, and turn on then half press.

I agree a edc needs to either be a very simple 2 mode

or have a really impressive user interface that allows you to get what you need ..right now!

Low, Medium , High … is my preference for a edc light.
And I want it to always start on low.

For me, it depends on how bright M mode is. If it’s bright enough to annoy people, even for the half-second that it’s on before I can switch to L, that’s not good. I do do the trick you suggested agenthex, but I’d rather not have to.

Also, I have two lights whose mode order is not LMH or HML, but one is MLH and the other is MHL. It’s confusing to switch from one to the other… imagine being in a dark restaurant, pulling out a light, holding the lens against my hand, turning it on, half-pressing to switch it to L, removing my hand, and blasting the restaurant with 500 lumens because this light was MHL instead of MLH!

Therefore, I prefer that all my lights go LMH with no memory. Well actually I’d prefer control rings on all my lights but my 2nd choice is LMH or LH with no memory.

For the times I EDC I usually carry a AAA twisty, and the Thrunite TI interface is very nice. Just twist for low, and twist harder for higher, though the tension on mine for high is a bit hard. i also have two itp a3’s with different mode arrangements (LMH, and I think MHL) so I know exactly what peteybaby is referring to, lol. A quick tip to do the trick one handed is just press again the pocket you take the light out of.
