Does anyone have experience with this AA version of the Trustfire TR-801:

500 lumens with a Q5 LOL Looks fine though and could maybe be modded with something more potent.

It does look pretty sharp to me though.

Who's gonna be the next guinea pig? :D

Very nice, memory works but it is a little fat for a 14500 flashlight. More when I get home :)

Maybe its just a normal version of the 801 with 2 exstra long springs and an inner tube

so the 14500 wont rattle. Just tried it with my 801 and it can be done with relative ease.

Could we kindly ask you to measure yours, so the above could be confirmed or not?

By the way: Its cheaper at Ebay.

By the way of course it is not 500 lumens, I think it is about 1000+ lumens

I am not using this flashlight a lot because of its width (it is a hair thinner than a thin 18650 flashlight). So I usually choose a slimmer 14500, a shorter 16340 or a longer 18650... It does not tailstand, memory works great, it is beautiful and its beam is that of a typical Q5 with a light OP reflector (smooth with no holes with only a couple of rings visible while whitewalling only). Also, it fits easily a TF 14500 (with flames) and plays very very well with an alcaline or NiMH AA.

Conclusion: Why am I not carrying this anymore? I will! Tomorrow!

I just received the 1 mode version of this light. It seems to be very well made. The "gold" band you see near the head is the brass pill that screws into the body and then the head screws to the pill.

There is a retaining ring to hold the reflector in place just like the retaining ring in the tail cap for the switch. This light is easy to mod.

It looks more or less (color-wise) like my Zebralights. It is a little heavy and thick for a 1AA light.

I've already replaced the switch with a forward clicky so that I could have the momentary feature since it's a 1 mode light. I haven't received my 14500 battery yet but it should arrive any day.

I've also ordered an aspheric lens to try in this light. The reflector will be able to be removed and the retaining ring will hold in the aspheric. The only "trick" will be getting the correct focal length for the aspheric.

If anyone who has this light reads this post I'd be interested to hear how it performs on a 14500.

I didn't (obviously) get the daily deal but I did get mine from Tmart and can confirm for anyone who is thinking of getting this that apparently this is an item they have in their U.S. warehouse since I received mine 4 days after placing my order.

If anyone wants to fully drive this either through using a 14500 (hopefully...still waiting for my 14500) or through changing the driver it seems to be able to handle the heat since it has a brass screw-in pill.

No it doesn't. It's not wide enough (or long enough for that matter). Since it's single mode I changed the switch out on mine for a forward clicky (I like the momentary feature). For anyone interested, that was an easy mod. I justed used one of the $2 forward clickies sold by Shiningbeam for the Rominsens.

To make it work correctly all you have to do is shave off a little bit of rubber on the underside of the tail cap cover.

I also have some small aspherics coming from DX. The problem here is that they emitter is not far away from the front glass lens so to put an aspheric there would require one with a short focal length which is probably not going to be what comes from DX.

I had a plastic aspheric from an old flood-to-throw light so I ground it down a bit to the correct size for this light (about 20 mm) but it couldn't focus the emitter. It needed to be further away than I could get it. With the right aspheric however it's an easy switch. You can remove the reflector and hold the aspheric in place with the same retaining ring that is used to hold in the reflector.

would a 20mm TIR fit? i think depth is around 11mm.

It should. It might be a little short actually causing the head to cut off some of the light but I'm not looking for spill anyway. Where would I find a 20 mm TIR that would fit a XR-E?

I have something that looks like a TIR (is a TIR I guess) from DX that is 22.5 mm but it looks like the actual optic is 20 mm and the surrounding plastic "holder" makes up the difference. I'm almost wondering if I could remove the plastic and find a way of making that work.

The one I have though acts more or less like a traditional reflector. I does have a little less spill due to the center collimating lens but it isn't any more focused than a traditional reflector/XR-E combination.

LEDSupply has legit Carclo optics. but i think the ones on KD are about the same. use search term "lens" and a bunch will show up.

my (limited) experience with TIR's is that the hotspot looks similar to a hotspot made with a reflector but there's a lot less spill. i guess that should mean that more of the emitter's output is directed to the hotspot but i don't know if that's actually true.

I think the one's I have (from DX) are about the same then. I think (but am not sure) that the reduce spill ends up as a brighter corolla rather than actually increasing throw.

You got me thinking though so I cut the plastic holder (surround) from one of my DX TIR's and ended up with just the clear plastic optic. It was the right size so I took the reflector and flat lens out and put the optic in. I'm just lucky that this particular light has a retaining ring to hold the reflector in so I can use it to hold the TIR in. I've never seen this approach before (retaining ring for the reflector) so I just lucked out.

I took it outside and the beam looks about like it did before with the reflector except that the spill was less distracting (particularly that hard outer edge). If the aspherics that are ordered don't focus in this light I'll probably live this TIR in.

Now I'm just hoping that when the 14500 arrives it will result in noticeably brighter output from this light and then either with or without an aspheric I'll have more or less what I was looking for.

I am not patient in my wait for the 14500's :)

I checked my mailbox today and saw that I had 3 orders from Manafont and Tmart that I didn't know were in there!

I got some 14500's so I can now confirm that at least my version of this light works on 14500. It seems brighter but it's not dark here yet so I'll be able to tell more later.

I also got a Sipik SK68 and I can confirm that at least my version does not work with 14500 and now it doesn't work period :) However the aspheric lens that was in it may be the correct focal length to use in the Ultrafire BJO8A! It's a plastic aspheric and I'll have to grind the lip down a bit but I compared it to another aspheric that I had tried (that had a focal length that was too long) and this one is shorter.

I'm not going to mess with that tonight but I thought I would mention it in this thread for anyone else who is interested in making a compact thrower out of the (Ultrafire) light.
