Supbeam K40: A Quick Pictorial

Hey guys, thought I’d share some photos of what I just got a couple of days ago: the Supbeam K40!
I think there’s quite a lot of excitement around this light, which I got directly from the manufacturer.

Here’s the case it came in. I thought the brand name was hilarious. Still is

The light came with a nylon holster, lanyard, spare o-rings and a tailcap boot, an instruction manual, and a fantastic warranty card

Unsurprisingly, the threads and o-rings came pretty dry.

Nicely centered emitter.

The lens is AR coated and is approximately 3.5mm thick.

The 3 x 18650 battery carrier is wired in serial and should not have any problems fitting longer protected cells.

From what little I can see, I believe the emitter does sit on a copper MCPCB. EDIT: Just took it apart, it is a copper MCPCB, with just the right amount of thermal paste underneath (not epoxy). I’ll post more pics of the takedown another day.

The reflector measures approximately 69mm wide and 52mm deep, so it’s definitely not as deep as the TN31’s (64mm according to turboBB’s review).

DISASSEMBLY UPDATE:

The driver is easily accessible after unscrewing the three screws on the driver side of the head.

Here’s the topside of the driver:

Under/battery side:

Mode changes are definitely magnetically controlled, as evident by the eight small chips (Hall effect/magnetic sensors I’m assuming) in a semi-circle on the outer edge of the driver. The control ring’s magnet was strong enough to drag a small screw around inside…that was fun for a while

This is the driver side of head sans the driver. Note the clean machining.

Here’s the emitter on a copper MCPCB  This was one of the biggest deal-makers for me…I have a copper fetish.

All that copper makes me warm and fuzzy inside…

To quickly summarize, is it a TN31 clone? No, but pretty darn close. Will it throw as well as a TN31? No, but pretty darn far.

For the money, I’d say it’s an absolutely great value for what you’re getting.

I apologize for the lack of beamshots, I need to get a better camera :frowning:

PS. I didn’t want to derail Jake25’s thread since I didn’t purchase this light from him, I got it directly from the manufacturer instead. Also, Jake mentioned that the ones he’s bringing in will be driven higher on the max level, so what you’re getting from him might be different. YMMV.

UPDATE 24 July 2013: Someone asked me to measure the emitter-side reflector opening to see whether there was enough of the “flat space” to bore out for an SST-90. The answer is a definite yes, the diameter of the “flat space” at its widest is 22.7mm, and the reflector opening is 8.9mm.

Thanks. :D Makes me want Jakes light even more. How much did you pay?

US$90 including shipping via DHL to Singapore.

LOL funny name. just lacks an “A” for supabeam!!!

There’s a reason why I had to change the name :~

Yes my version will be driven at 3.5A and I confirmed with them that theirs is driven at 3.0A

Nice review Mose, you should show a picture of how thick the AR lens is, unless I missed it. That sucker is THICK!

waiting for the pics

I got mine as well from Jake though and it looks more like the tn30 but with a single emitter

Whoa there, MosesM… You’ve whet my appetite at the worst possible time. I promised myself no ordering new stuff for at least 2 months :stuck_out_tongue:
D’yer think they’ll not print the name for an extra 5 bucks??

Or get a better version of it from a US dealer who posts on this site regularly for $18 more.

First post updated with some takedown pics!

Nice work MoseM. Looks like a well made piece of kit.

@Bose - oddly enough for Europeans getting stuff from China is often less hassle (customs seems to take more of an interest in transatlantic parcels).

@BanglaBob - I tend to agree - the SupBeam name is horrible.

Still, interesting light - as is Jakes.

Let's not forget that it's driven harder as well !

I would if I could, but shipping costs from the USA is a killer! Something in the region of 50 bucks :frowning:

Just had a quote myself - $98 shipped to UK.

Where do I get this light for $108?
I want one…

way too many similarities with thrunite tn31. check out the pix from:

i’m starting to believe that supbeam is the OEM for thrunite. of course both parties probably won’t admit it. and of course supbeam will have to tweak around a bit with the CNC program so that the two won’t look too similar. the internals seem to be fundamentally the same, just tweaked a bit…

is this a K40 or a TN31??? don’t be misled by the color LOL

what about the MCPCB and plastic centering disc?

BTW i just received my K40. quality is excellent, easily at par with fenix, 4sevens, et al. way way way above XXX-fire levels. i would even dare say it’s a bit better than 4sevens…
