Calling Old4570: P60 pills in NON-p60 Hosts

Old4570, you're perhaps the most venerated person on this board and a wealth of knowledge. Sometimes though I think you are short on words (something I'm never accused of!) and I'm left begging for more. This is one time where I'm going to hopefully re-open an intriguing topic you opened on Jayki, unfortunately not helped by the picture hosting place you used at the time (picturegood.com), seemingly defunct or at least my dns servers don't know of it.

I hope it's okay to copy your own post to here and hopefully get more discussion.

Best P60 Host

Recently Ive been playing with my lights , and using some older lights , I have been able to drop in some left over P60 pills into non P60 hosts ...

1st on is my old Romisen RL-B7 , http://cgi.ebay.com/Romisen-RL-B7-7w-7-Watt-Luxeon-LED-Flashlight-FREE-S-H_W0QQitemZ160347494341QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Flashlights?hash=item25557497c5

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.852 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7246 http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3427

The other light , is my SAIK SA-8 , pulled out the reflector , and light pill , then widened the spring on the P60 drop in so it would grip the body and now my SAIK is equipped with a P60 drop in ...

Now you may wonder why do this , and the answer is output , both these lights offer greatly increased output over say a Solarforce L2 Host Body ..

For some reason most P60 hosts seem to block a lot of output , and with these two non P60 hosts , they dont seem to block output anywhere near as bad , hence the greater output .

So, yeah, I did my homework (that and a lot more) before posting, but keep coming dry.

No being an owner of any of the flashlights mentioned, could you (and anyone else) indulge us as to the particulars of (what I assume you to mean) fitting P60 pills inside these flashlights' bodies? If I could put in a nice XM-L drop-in pill into one of these bodies, for instance, I could have a cheap "candle mode" flashlight option (run the flashlight with no head or reflector), as well as how you mention, possibly less light blocked by the P60 host design. This very well could be what I've been looking for, at about half the price I planned (not wanting to buy another $35 flashlight, and already having the drop-ins).

Also, simply replacing the pill with a good one from a P60 drop-in would seem to address the biggest issue with at least the Saik SA-8: atrocious heatsinking (or lack thereof).

I'm partly confused because all P60 drop-in pills I have are only threaded about halfway down the pill. That means the pill needs to screw INTO something, not 'down onto' something like a C8 pill would. With the models you listed: DX "10W K2", Romisen RC-E4, and Saik SA-8 (other compatible models welcome), it would seem to me the pills all screw 'into' those bodies. So how do you make them fit? Not owning these, it's hard to visualize. And which would you recommend most for this?

BTW, if you need it, I found postimage.org to be an easy, no-frills, direct-linkable, no-registration site to upload/link to pics, and seems pretty reliable (not sure how they make money-no ads).

I did look into this on CPF , comparing different bezels on a Solarforce L2 ..

Output = is a very interesting thing ...

I was planning on doing another article about it ...

The lights ive talked about , have slightly larger heads than your usual run of P60 hosts ... [ P60 = Name of Surefire Drop in thats been adopted as a standard ]

http://www.manafont.com/product_info.php/cree-t6-3mode-himidstrobe-memory-led-dropin-module-42v-max-p-5273 P60 module or drop in .

Now they dont really screw in , rather they drop in and are held in place by the Neg [ outside spring ] and the head ..

Now with the Romisen RL-B7 , its that easy , the pill [ P60 ] Drops in , after you pull out the old bits , the Saik is a little different ..

It has a reflector retaining ring , I use the reflector retaining ring to hold the pill in place ...

Now lets get back to output .. Output is blocked by the flashlight body , all those nice looking bezels that people like to use block spill .. The larger the bezel - deeper , the more spill is lost , so output is lost ..

If you were to test a standard L2 , Actually I will ...

With bezel in place [ standard L2 Defencive Bezel ] 266OTF Lumens

Now lets remove the bezel [ Only ] and see how we go = 330OTF Lumens

So simply removing the bezel increases outout [ Spill ] and gains us 64Lumens

So if you chose a host body that blocks less spill , your output should increase ...

Lights with brighter spill / wider spill / such as XP-G and XM-L will be more affected by blockage from the bezel , and you will see greater gains , from removing said blockage ..

Hope this helps ...

Thank you. I'm able to see it better now.

Which of the lights you listed can operate with a 'replaced pill' and still operate with the head & reflector taken off (like 'candle' mode)? You mentioned the Saik has a 'reflector retaining ring' (not sure what this is--mainly know retaining rings from tailcaps), and that you use it to hold the pill in place. Does that mean that you can remove the head & reflector of your modified SA-8 and still use it in candle mode? Or, which of the lights you listed, when modified as-described, WON'T work in candle mode (because they rely on the head & reflector to keep the pill pushed down)?

Thanks again.

None of them can , due to the design of the P60 system ..

If you remove the head , you remove the retention system , and the outer spring will push the drop in out , as will the + spring and battery .

With the SAIK , it wont either as the pill is attached to the head [ P60 mod ] , If you want candle mode , [ remove the head ] then I would suggest a generic non P60 flashlight like the Romisen RL-B7 or SAIK , there's lots of them . and simply upgrade to the driver / emitter you want ...

If you look at this link , this is the sort of thing your after , just make sure it can tailstand , if you want it to be a candle , FYI , SAIK does not tailstand , at least the two I have dont .

I just ordered this candlestick capable light for my bike -- Sky Ray 1JC8 from manafot 13.39 there is a thread on here about it. It should be here in about 10 days

Looks like you're talking about this page:

Thanks for the tip. Never seen that link before.

A very valuable bit of info in the above link is that the weapon pressure pad switch intended for Solarforce apparently works on the above.

Sigh, it's an XR-E. Single mode too, but some may like that. Just amazes me that new flashlghts are coming out with XR-E's, when the XP line came out... like 2 years ago? Not to mention XM. Is Cree even making XR-E's anymore? I don't know makers are getting them from.

The Yezl Y6 is still looking tops for me (if XM-L is wanted), but it's in the $30's after shipping. I don't mind paying for something good, and don't want them to lower quality, I'm just still seeing what's out there. I wish I knew what other models its tailcap was compatible with. Some of the new Ultrafire look nice too, including its intriguing 3 x AA (not AAA) C88. All these do 'candlestick' mode. UF is releasing a LOT of models lately.

Where possible in detail look the process design of the P60 system ?
Presence photography was simply fine

my small question)

P60 system ?

Pictured Ultrafire L2 , + P60 drop in ...

The drop in simply drops into the head part of the body which is made up of two parts ...

First is the Bezel/lens outer part , and then the internal part wich also makes up the body/battery tube , which the tailcap screws onto ...

Its basically a drop in fit [ pill into light ] and tolerances are not very tight , which is why most of us wrap the pill in Al-foil so heat is transfered to the body .

If you look at the links , you will see most P60 hosts follow a simple formula even though they may look different on the outside ..

Now were you interested in how I put a P60 pill in a SAIK ?

Then that will need to wait

As I am planning on doing a small article on my modified lights with lots of pictures ...

I think a thread on modified lights might help some .. I will include the SAIK as well as a few other lights as they are so easy to mod / upgrade .

Shall wait

I Have SAIK with faulty driver...

The driver is an issue with the SAIK , I had to Mod a 2 mode driver into my other one [ Now my Mothers light ]
