Match's Mods: 6x XML Maglite project

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.

How did you hook up the emitters ?
It's kind of hard to tell from the pics, but the emitters are wired up in series. Having 6 xml's in parallel seemed like trouble trying to keep load sharing constant. Not to mention the combined vf mated up well with the powergenix cells.

Hey Match, is there any chance you'd be willing to make & sell some more of these?
This will most likely be the only one. Besides, it's not really what you'd call a budget light. You can build one though, it's a fairly straightfoward deal. If you want the dimensions for milling the head, let me know.

Also, in all honesty, this torch is really too bright for social work. Fun as hell to play with though...

That definitely has the Don seal of approval even if I can't see the duct tape ;)

Isn't the current drop more likely to be voltage bleeding off the NiZn cells?

Getting 12AA into a 3D Mag is tricky - did you have to bore it to make them fit?

I like the look of it!! Reminds me of my recent battle with soft aluminium!!! Did I say I Love the way it looks?

Hexa-Match? (6 match)

6x3 match?

Unfortunately its not related to 24, thats the german nade...

Wow...I really was tired when I typed this up. Yes, the cell voltage does drop as they're used, but not as much as I had first expected. That's what led me to the slight increase in vf helping to limit current and indirectly, voltage bleedoff.

Yes, I did bore the mag body to accept a 4x3 cell setup, but in the end just went with a 3x4 array which only required opening up the tailcap a bit.

Don, tape and popsicle sticks, just for you:

That is one INCREDIBLE mod...take a bow

I was going to ask about the battery holder, glad to see the Don school of engineering is alive and well. :)

Certainly a lot cheaper than buying one of the premade versions.

Yup. I'll eventually get around to making my own, but I can't see paying someone ~$50 for a bit of plastic and steel rod...

Fantastic, thanks for sharing! You may consider to change your headline to Match's Mods and Custom

Mad Match comes to my mind... 8)

Good grief Match you're competing with the sun and coming out on top! Nice piece of work there! Brilliant idea with the AA battery array, when I first saw this post I immediately wondered how you would power so many XM-Ls with 3 puny D cells.

Congrats on a great project Match, please keep us updated.

Needless to say, frontpage'd and sticky'd.

Match's Sun PE (Personal Edition)

Did you try if you can burn a piece of paper with?

Great custom work! I would have used 6x D nimh cells that would probably suffice to power neatly that thing... providing you had a 6D maggie. But a 6D maggie in 6xXM-L can easily be called:

Match's Photon Baton Extreme

If we don't blind you first we can whack you just fine...

Preorder now!

1st 10 customers will be given a survival kit and welding mask as a standard safety device during daylight use.

Thanks again for humoring me guys.

I love it! The missus does think I'm quite mad...

Another name I was considering was the H.S. Persuader. Every person I've shown this light to, including my dear sweet mother, has shouted "Holy Shit!" once I turned it on.

Haaa! +1

Even Chuck Norris would want one!

Im still looking at that thinking that the grooves for the fins could and should be much deeper............. hahahah! where do you find such chunks of aluminium?

At work we use 6"x14"x50foot sections as bus work for carrying large amounts of power to a DC arc furnace. This piece came of the corner of a scrap chunk that was sitting around in mud for the last 6+ years...

As a side note, I just realized that Boaz came close to designing this light for me awhile back in this post .

wait... 135 deg F is not even 60 deg C... How is it possibly soo cool!!! Whats your ambient temp?

My single SST-50 torch from 23 deg C (74F), made it past 57 deg C (135F) in under 14 minutes, and its a well heatsinked head design.. Thats crazy.

Howly mowly, man. What a torch :O Match's Pocket Sun :crown: Hands down 8)

PS: paint it in black to MATCH the body, yeah :p

PS2: you have to create a good 3xAA batt holder, like this one.

You Sir, are a very sick man! Are those ants that I see leaping off that smoldering tree just before the bark ignites? Those poor ants! Yell
Well done Match. I want one! You might want to pull the battery pack out after each use to let it cool down separately of the light. Ive had 3 of my Powergenix AA's leak on me during heavy discharge.

Those tend to have rather high resistance. They're probably not suited to currents of over an amp.

very impressive
