Sanrenmu GB-702

What a neat little pocket knife , Locks open tight , very smooth action , extremely dificult to open via thumb stud [ grip panels are in the way ]

But for the price . Feels really nice in the hand , full length steel liners , the clip is super tight [ maybe to tight ? ] ..

I just need to see how good the blade steel is , but a serious thumbs up on this one .

Enlan Bee L01

The Bee is a lot of knife , its larger than it looks , has really nice heft [ I like that ] , full length steel liners , smoot - tight - and still easy to open [ very ergonomic ] , it locks open nice and tight . The clip is really nice , and the knife did not fail to impress . Again only time will tell about the blade steel

Both knives at first inspection seem to be just fantastic value for the money , and the only thing that could possibly change my mind is if the blade steel is just rubbish .

Sanrenmu 763 Update ...

This was my first SRM , and so far so good , but what has really impressed is the blade steel , While its not had a brutal work out , the steel so far has really impressed , it really makes a lot of the 440 Blades out there look like junk . In this price range , Sub $15 , these Chinese knives seem to just rule the roost ...

The only thing remaining is to see how sharpening the blade goes , while some steel seems to hold a edge , sharpening the blade can be problematic ...

It takes a good blade to hold a edge , yet also take a edge without developing a bur .

I noticed on my 763 that if you press the axis lock button you can "flick " it open fairly easy.

If one would remove the thumbstud on the 702, would it still be possible to open it? Like grabbing the blade for two handed opening? Or is that too fiddly ?

After having a 763 for a while, I'm still a huge fan for the value in these. The blade has a great shape for everyday tasks.

The only negative I have found is I wish the Axis lock was a smooth as my BM Osbourne, but I can't expect that precision for the extremely low cost. You can operate the BM lock from one side very smoothly where after a little use, you need to grip both side of the 763's lock since it staggers a hair.

Regarding the steel: If the steel is actually what SanRenMu says it is (8Cr13MoV, and I have no reason to doubt it) it will run circles around 440A and 440B in just about every conceivable category.

There's more carbon in the steel, so it should take a sharper edge and hold it for longer. There's the same amount of chromium, so it should resist rust quite well. The addition of molybdenum and vanadium to the alloying elements should make it easy to sharpen even though the actual hardness of the steel is pretty good. 8Cr13MoV is essentially a Chinese produced version of AUS-8A steel, a premium Japanese cutlery steel first produced about 10-12 years ago, and still a solid, middle-of-the-road steel.

Which reminds me, I really need to get on that third section of the knife primer.

It open easy .. Just pull from near the tip of the blade , and there is almost no resistance .

Thanks, I might have to order it then. It seems to offer a lot in a tiny package.

Just got the L01-1 (the one with the contoured micarta grips) in the mail yesterday, and I like it alot. The grips are nicer than I expected. You are right about the knife being larger than it seems - it's almost as long as my GB-902 but I wouldn't have guessed that until laying them alongside each other. The L01-1 is significantly chunkier, though.

If only these makers would move more toward tip-up carry, or at least position the clip for deep carry like the L02 and 763.

Just received mine, indeed it is really nice. Like it better better the 704, which is just too boxy for my taste. Build quality on the 710 is still superior (better clip and better frame lock). The 702 will become my new small EDC, when the 605 is just too ultra-small for the job indented. It has a partial flat grind, that I like very much. The tip-up-carry clip is too stiff, but you can pre-raise (lift it with your index finger) it before clipping it onto your jeans pocket, so it isn't as bad as the 736 or 401 clip.

More info two posts down.

Nice!

A little more on the 702.

I really like the 702. It's great for light chores and for carrying in more formal or discreet situations. It is very light and has great fit and finish. Blade is perfectly centered and locks up tight.

The gold accents actually look really nice. I was afraid that they would look really cheap but they're surprisingly attractive. I was also afraid that the thumbstud was plated and flake away with usage, but its a solid piece of "gold" (brass, perhaps) upon inspection after removal (the threading inside the stud is the same color).

I like everything about it except for the pocket clip. The pocket clip looks like an afterthought, it seems like they just added it on with some leftover parts (in fact, it's the same clip as the 704).

While a siginificant portion of the handle is exposed when in the pocket, it's small and thin enough to almost look like a pen.

It was slightly dull but 5 minutes on the sharpmaker took care of that. The thumbstud's placement and size make it difficult to sharpen without removing it unless you want a more obtuse angle. Be careful not to strip the screw like I did, though I was still able to get it out.

Overall, it's an excellent little knife and, like all SRMs I've handled, well worth the money.

Is this the bit where I apologize for bringing up these knife brands in that Boker review?

I think I may have cost some people here a goodly amount of cash

Ya think?

edit: I am gratefully lighter in the wallet, btw.

Let's all blame Budgeteer for starting this thread and no, I have never ever posted there. ;-)

I have the 702 older version without the gold trim I like it a lot very nice style. I have the 704 also which cost me $5 shipped in a recent tiny deal sale, the 704 will be my EDC knife.
