The BLF DIY Forum First Annual Scratch made light contest - CONTEST IS DONE - WINNERS are Announced! in the OP

You just introduced doubt into one of the ideas I had for an early build now that I was going to begin modding. In the first post I would have called it as clearly not qualifying but nowā€¦.

Itā€™s portable in the sense of itā€™s small, light, and easy to take along. The idea is more along the the lines of a small emergency light. Small, light and portable enough to carry along in a pack camping. I suppose it could be held in the hand to point forward while moving but it would be awkward. Itā€™s more of a multifuel LED lantern than flashlight or headlamp. If that doesnā€™t work I have an idea that would make it more of a forward pointing pack strap light.

Just want to confirm which way I am looking at since it affects a couple parts choices.

You know, it gets into gray areas. A lantern is a portable light. You take it with you for camping. Usually, they have some kind of handle, so they can be carried.

I would think a lantern is ok.

Hey OL,

Man this is a terrific idea. Count me in!!

Put me down for the machine made category.

Does an LED array count as a multi-emitter?

Like this? Yes it would.

Hi OL, could you possibly include another category; multi-cell single emitter?

Go on, I know you love your eneloops

I recommend lumping this in with one of the other two categories (either multi emitter or single emitter). Iā€™m not sure it should be itā€™s own category, might have a low turnout.

OP has been edited.

I think you missed the edit for hand-made.
I assume that sub-category change applies to the hand-built category as well. My light idea fits the new and previous sub-categories, so it doesnā€™t matter to me.

Edited the OP again.

Iā€™m in for a very large headache of the machine variety. Thanks for the extension to the build time. I get my plastic friend off on the 24th so cant really start till then, maybe.

ā€œNo pre-made heat sinkā€ Iā€™ve built lights using heatsinks from computers radios etc in the past, they are pre-made. Are they banned? Thanks.

I am in for the handmade category. Itā€™s not clearly across the line of portability but close enough Iā€™ll let the judges assess it for disqualification instead of giving it away.

Let there be partsā€¦

Hand made would be cutting up a stick of aluminum or making one out of plumbing parts. If you have to cut/form the heat sink to fit, I think it qualifies, but if itā€™s a slip in fit, no work/no worries, I think itā€™s pre-made. Is that clear as mud?

Is she inflatable? Usually plastic friends get you offā€¦ J)

Not in my thread they donā€™t texaslunatic.Tongue Out

OK - Iā€™ve been stumped with a decent enough idea until this afternoon.

I was sitting on the couch eating hot chilli/cheese, watching some pre-recorded Top Gear, & drinking beer (ā€¦so you know itā€™s got to be a quality ideaā€¦)

I spotted something s) sitting on the living room table that would workā€¦

Iā€™m now in for a hand-made, single emitter build

Is it plastic?
Whoops I meant to say bump. Iā€™m still waiting for someone to give me an idea on what to build. I looked on my lounge room table and saw empty beer cans. Do I have to recycle these in a furnace to build a light?

No, but you can fit quite the reflector in the end of a beer canā€¦.

Thanks for moving the end date!
I probably will not have time bevore July 12th, so I would like to enter with a really quick&dirty build in the hand made category, just for the fun of it. (Building stuff with things found in the bits and bobs box is always fun, wonā€™t buy any parts for it. )
