The BLF DIY Forum First Annual Scratch made light contest - CONTEST IS DONE - WINNERS are Announced! in the OP

Said factory in a secret locationā€¦ in the outback.

I finally got in all my parts inā€¦ only took three weeks for the Parcel Smashers to get a padded envelope from Oregon to Texas. Fedex lost a package for over two weeks (delivery time was quoted as two days).

Hint, my reflector weighs over 3 poundsā€¦ 1500 grams for you Eurotypes.

Iā€™m thinkingā€Star Trek, The Planet Killerā€. Canā€™t wait. Woohoo!

Pheeew. I thought I had competition again. I panicked when I read the above. I went and checked, your in the hand built category. Lucky me unlucky other guys in hand built.

Rufus, you would be amazed what grows in the outback. Red dust and salt bush. I havent tried that combination. Iā€™ll send a batch over and let you report back. Cheers guys.

I guess that if the light has to be pulled along by pack-horses itā€™s still classed as portable??? lol

Thanks Foy for the offer  , but I ordered the FLL lenses which should work well enough.

O-L should have added a rule; no DIY lighthouses

TP has BIG Hands.Wink And I canā€™t DQ him, heā€™s within driving distanceā€¦Surprised

Just posted an update to my build. I finally got around to working on it. Enjoy!

The time frame for the contest is less than generous, but the notice especially seems short, if it was initially announced on 5/29 and to begin on 6/8. If its an annual contest, the time frame need not be arbitrarily short, but I digress. The links to the participants threads would be easier to follow if they were attributed to each contestants name as they appear in the ā€œlist of contestantsā€ post rather than being scattered in a following post. I do like the concept of BLF build contests and will be sure to give it a go for the next one!

Well, it looks like the parts I ordered arenā€™t going to be arriving until after I leave for vacation, so I wonā€™t even be able to start working on it until after the deadline. Hopefully Iā€™ll be able to participate in next yearā€™s build. Good luck to everyone!

With consideration to this being the 1st Annual Scratch Build Contest. Just like building a light, you give birth to the Idea first, then improve on it after finding itā€™s limitations. Next year will be a doozie!

I agree that the links beside the members names, acting as an extension, would indeed make it easier to follow. Some pretty dang cool builds going on here, interesting to me is the actual usefulness once completed.

Sorry to hear that Lunaras, maybe youā€™ll be able to build it anyway and of course get in a trial run with a build thread?

I was thinking we should have a scratch built driver contest. I know there will be less contestants. We could have a small group decide what the driver format should be. have a few set rules of what the driver sshould include, such as 17mm, 3 modes, no pwm. Though if this actually happens, we should be more creative than that

If that contest would be happening now, texaspyro would win because of his programmable morse mode

Links have been changed.

First time I ever did one of these things, but I probably would have still put a time limit on it. If/when there is a next year's annual contest, I imagine it will be quite different and hopefully, someone else will host and run it. I hope that our Admin will now think about having a contest like this each year. If I had to do it over, I would not have done it at this time of year. Maybe in late April or early May and I would possibly have posted a month ahead of time. I would probably also include a category for best modified factory light.

I have scratch built a driver for my scratch built lightā€¦

BLF first annual scratch built 17mm 5a boost driver. must be 4 mode no blinky, no visible PWM, and fit in a standard p60/c8 pill

contest ends ASAP

winner will receive a lot of thank yous from many grateful BLF members

All that scratching might develop a nasty rash.Tongue Out Better try some flea powder.

Maybe the next contest could be thematic. As in period pieces, i.e. a light Washington might have carried, or Jack the Ripper, or Kublai Khan, or Galahad, etc.

With all those scratches, maybe TP is making a Sumerian Special designed in cuneiform.

So, how many are going to make the deadline of July 15? Iā€™m cutting it close, but I think I can get something ready by them (it might be the biggest twisty light youā€™s ever seen though  ). I still have a fair amount of work to do, but the major body and head assembly work is behind me, WooHoo! Just little things like the driver, lens and bezel to figure out.
